Beatles in Mono.
Either way I'm still going to Best Buy early tomorrow to try and get a copy there, and I'll have my iPhone on me checking the Amazon status constantly. Worst case scenario I can always return the BB set if the Amazon set can be shipped by Friday (saving $60 by going with Amazon).
If I can buy it from Best Buy and Amazon's system glitched and won't deliver until October I'll just cancel the Amazon order tomorrow...
Edit: I just noticed that since I placed my order they removed the back-order notices from both mono and stereo pages.

I've read reviews the past few days that suggest that the LP monos. in pristine condition (and the 1987 CDs) from years ago are quite good by comparison. Some people don't hear any difference, while others are saying that the difference is amazing. I won't know until I hear the sets for myself, I suppose.
As a collector, I'm sure you've probably heard the very best over the years as far as the Beatles are concerned.
Something that I always felt with the 1987 CDs was that the songs may have been slightly faster than I was used to them. But more importantly, if you're like me and have these songs all etched in your brain from so many years of listening to many vinyl imports, in 1987 the fadeouts often seemed to be done too early on the first few albums! Did you ever notice this? In your mind as you listen you're expecting to hear the endings fade out longer with even four more "No No No No No"s on NOT A SECOND TIME, for example... but the songs trailed off much sooner that expected on the '87 releases. I wonder if this will be improved in the new releases?
As I write this at 6:30 am, my wife popped in to say "Be sure to write down what you want me to pick up at Best Buy this morning" (meaning the MONO SET that I asked her to get me while I was at work) and I told her I still didn't know if I was going to get it!

Glad to hear reports from everyone that suggests these are living up to the hype.

Can't believe I'm up at 6 in the morning to get in line at Best Buy...I feel like a kid again!
EDIT - the order just changed to "Shipping Soon"! Double sweet!
Joe,
Congratulations. I am thinking you will not be disappointed. :)
BTW, yes -- I have noticed what I think are shortened fade-outs with the 1987 sets. The speed-up is something I cannot tolerate. I've been studying the music of the Beatles for decades, and expect a song to be in such-and-such a key. When it is not, it is extremely disorienting. And as I've mentioned in other threads, the slowing down of pitch is not as disorienting, and is (IMO) in some cases preferable.
A store rep had mentioned there being 5 of each version, and I saw at least 3 folks leaving with both a mono and stereo set each.
I can live with waiting a few months more before I can get a box, but it's still frustrating to have waited an hour at the front of the line and come away empty. I really wish that had used a voucher system for something of this limited quantity and great demand (there were at least two dozen folks in line when the doors opened).

There was only 6 people (or couples) waiting outside for the store to open and half were looking for Rock Band and half wanted the box sets.
I'm leaving for Best Buy shortly, West coast time here. Can you tell me where they were located? I read earlier that the sets were on an end cap? Near the musci section, or right in front of the entrances, or somewhere where they place the new releases? I hope I can walk in and go straight to them and grab the mono box before someone else!
Thanks!
Of course, that decision is subject to change as 10AM approaches and I internally debate whether or not to go to my other local Best Buy (which did not open at 8am for the promotion) just to see if they have any mono sets...

I think it may vary from store to store but they were on a large floor display (with all the single CDs, the BB exclusive crates, the various Rock Band incarnations, etc) rather than on an endcap in the music section. Hope I read this before you left.
Every other music related article over the past few years says how CDs are going away.
Then EMI gets this publicity machine going for the most popular rock group of all time & have an opportunity to clean up selling CDs once again. Yet stores are getting 5 copies???? What the heck?

It's ridiculous these sets are so hard to get. Who dropped the ball on this?

But an even bigger problem is the Stereo box -- that isn't supposed to limited. 4 to 6 week wait on Amazon? That is just an open invitation for the young and impatient to bootleg. I am old and patient

Take for instance Amy Winehouse's debut album -- Frank. It wasn't released in the US for something like TWO YEARS after the UK release. FAIL. What do you think 99% of US fans will do -- pay some outrageous price for an import CD or download via P2P? And often, when something does make it to the US, you aren't getting the same thing. Tracks get eliminated, etc. If the music industry never loses an opportunity to say FU to its customers is it any wonder that an entire generation is saying FU right back?

I ran out to Best Buy this morning, and was there when they opened the doors at 10 AM. There was a small crowd waiting.
I started searching for the stereo box and just as I turned the corner into the box set aisle, I saw two guys pick up both of the sets on display there. Think I was going to be disappointed, I turned around... and saw the big cardboard display in the middle of the store with the individual CDs and the remaining stereo boxes... all five of them.
And then they had four.
I doubt they will have any now.
The only mono boxes I saw were in the hands of the guy in front of me in the checkout line, and he bought two of them.
I'm a sucker for good packaging, and this is some of the best. Nice sturdy box that seals magneticly, with two stacks of CDs inside with ribbons to help lift them out.
I've just listened to my favorite album, A Hard Day's Night, for the first time in stereo, and it sounds terrific.
Now if only Barnes & Noble would ship my mono box...
