Beatles in Mono.

Carlo,

I just ordered the mono. set less than an hour ago.  I've also written to the company asking them if they have several copies in stock.  I'll let you know what I find out, if you like.  I wouldn't give up on it, unless price is a major consideration.  I was assured that I would receive a copy, although not quite as fast as Jack did (above). ;)

Scott, definitely let me know, unless they're fleecing (like the Amazon import at over $500) I'll definitely buy. I'll send you a PM with my contact information. Thanks!

Just to give you an idea, I live in a fairly large suburban area and it's one of the more trafficed stores in the region. Obviously, I'm just guessing but I would think that most stores that fit that description will get about the same number. That being said, I'd be there early just in case.

Carlo,

Most definitely.  The price wasn't too bad, either.

Thanks Travis,

Probably a good idea to get there early! Hopefully my Best Buy is one that has a few copies. If not, a few miles down the road is another BB.

Fwiw, Amazon UK never went out of stock and still has them apparently. They list it at £199.99, but when you add it to your cart it's £173.90,
or $287. Cheapest shipping should get it to you for less than $300. Not cheap, of course, but a decent price given the exchange rate.

I never do this, but I will be at BB first thing tomorrow morning just to see what they've got and pick up the Stereo set.

Nelson,

When you get your copy, please let me know if the price is comparable to the one I sent along to you.  I'm curious.  Thanks.

Jack,

Yes, that's within a couple of dollars of what I paid for my copy.  (Actually, mine was $269.00, but shipping and tax put it around $300.00.)  I didn't think of Amazon.co.uk for this purchase, although I used them exclusively for my DS9 and VOY collections.

Small correction: it still shows up at £199.99 in your cart, but drops when you start the checkout process and before you finalize the transaction.

Did McCartney just signal the inclusion of the Beatles catalog on iTunes?

I just called my Best Buy and the sales guy wasn't sure. I said the weekly ad says they'll have the limited Mono Box set. He asked the media department guy, but he didn't specify Mono. when he answered me, he replied that they'll have it. And I asked him if he meant the Mono box set, slight pause and he said yeah. So I take that as being a strong maybe. I doubt he knew what I was talking about.

Thought I'd try anyway to call. I'll go anyway, just in case.

The mono box is listed as $249.99 in Best Buy's computer system. I don't know if it'll change/lower once it is officially available tomorrow but I think if it was on sale, it would have been listed in the ad.

I got shipping confirmation on Friday for the stereo set.  The mono set has yet to ship.

That's okay.  I'll just download it from iTunes:

IMO, I don't think this remastering job would have been done unless the Beatles catalog were going to be put on ITunes.

It's still just a matter of when, though, isn't it?

Oh, and speaking as someone who couldn't wait until tomorrow to pick up a couple of albums (Abbey Road, Let It Be... stuff not in the mono set I might one day find), they do sound better than the '87 versions. To use a movie comparison, the '87 versions were the VHS version of the Wizard of Oz, the new versions are blu-ray.

"FWIW: The Fabs had at least four number one albums ca. 1991-2000.  I am curious how either of these boxed sets will chart. ;) "

I think that the remasters will only be able to chart on Billboard's Top Catalog Albums and Comprehensive Albums lists.  They are ineligible for the Top 200 Albums because they are re-issues older than 18 months.  (This is the same reason that Michael Jackson's titles weren't on the Top 200 even though there was a week or two where he outsold the best-selling current title.)
One of my favorite albums...

Eric,

Good points.  I will be looking at the UK chart progress as well.  The three Anthology albums did not chart similarly in the U.K. and U.S. when they were released.  I believe they did much better in the U.S.

As a lifelong, diehard Beatles Fan (and former Big Time Collector) I've been agonizing for months on how to approach this. One minute I figured I'd try to get the MONO set; then the next minute I figured I'd get the STEREO. After years and years of collecting all sorts of variable LPs, Obis, Imports, you name it, I wound up selling off a lot of my stuff a couple of years ago.

I know a lot of you will scoff at this (and I used to myself!) but for some reason lately I'm enjoying the U.S. Capitol Albums more than anything else. It's a weird turn of events, really; when I was growing up as a collector in the '70s I would only seek out the British vinyl and "cleaner sounding" original quality recordings. I wouldn't be caught dead with the Capitols.... but as I get older I find I'm growing more nostalgic for albums like THE BEATLES' SECOND ALBUM and SOMETHING NEW!  And, believe it or not, even the HELP! films soundtrack with the instrumentals!

But get this -- just tonight my wife discovered that a 7-11 store down the block from me jumped street date and had a small display of the new STEREO discs on their counter .. so I zoomed right down there in the car and picked up RUBBER SOUL, REVOLVER, and SGT. PEPPER! (They only has those three and ABBEY ROAD and LET IT BE). So far I've ony played RUBBER SOUL in the car --- sounds awesome!

Tomorrow I have to go to work (I have been known to take off just to get a new DVD release or something, but tomorrow I can't do this) and I may just instruct my wife to get to Best Buy when they open and try to snag a MONO set. I don't know why ...I used to have the White Album in MONO from Japan.... I think as I get older I don't feel as pressing a need to have "every single version" anymore... but I don't know.. I still can't make up my mind.

Joe,

I won't scoff.  There are very good reasons for enjoying the American albums over the British on occasion.  This is what I was referring to above when I mentioned The Beatles 2nd Album, and the level of sibilence.  The grit on those early American recordings has an appeal all of its own, and those pressings have their own peculiar charm.

BTW, I'm still an avid collector.  That will probably always be with me.  My Beatles LPs are one of my prized possessions.  I like CDs as well, but aesthetically, they will never be as pleasing to me as an LP.  And as much as I know I will love both the monaural and stereophonic editions of The Beatles Remastered, they will never replace my LPs, only displace them.

Enjoy your new albums! :)

Thanks..

Well, I've now spun RUBBER SOUL, REVOLVER, and PEPPER ... in the car, which is the best-sounding system I've got at the moment. They're lively and loud and crisp... but y'know, at the risk of not doing cartwheels, I'm so overly familiar with these songs in so many released forms on plastic over the decades that there's nothing that leaps out at me to the point where I'd say "WOW! I NEVER HEARD THAT BEFORE!"... you know what I mean?

And so, with less than 12 hours remaining before Best Buy opens its doors in the morning ...  I wonder if I need that MONO set? I've got the early four 1987 released CD albums in MONO still.... plus those Capitol U.S. discs which offer both Stereo and Mono... are the songs really going to sound so different?   Much more lively, sure - but "different"??  And will I be playing them very often?

Decisions, decisions!

Joe,

I've read reviews the past few days that suggest that the LP monos. in pristine condition (and the 1987 CDs) from years ago are quite good by comparison.  Some people don't hear any difference, while others are saying that the difference is amazing.  I won't know until I hear the sets for myself, I suppose.

As a collector, I'm sure you've probably heard the very best over the years as far as the Beatles are concerned.  I'm actually almost as excited about the packaging and liner notes as I am about the four-year project and painstaking work that produced these pressings.

BTW, if anyone is interested, here's a neat essay on Pete Best and his role with the Fabs ("Original Beatles Drummer Pete Best Tells His Side of the Fab Four Story").

My close friend, who owns a music store, just Emailed me and told me he has 1 stereo set and 2 mono sets left in his store.  I told him to please hold them, in case anyone here gets caught without either set.  When I hear back from him, I'll post how long he plans on holding them.

I just canceled my initial order and told my friend to hold these for me.  When I called him today, he was on vacation.  I didn't know he'd be back today, hence my going ahead and ordering them elsewhere.  Now I hope my cancellation worked. ;)
