Shout Factory has announced that they will be releasing complete series sets for both the Transformers and the G.I. Joe animated shows. These will be restored broadcast episodes and remastered audio.

Also reported that new features will be created for their releases and that some of the episodes on these shows will be released to home video for the first time:

Re: Shout Announces: Complete Series Sets for G.I. Joe, Transformers

This is an interesting move by Shout!. On one hand, it gets everyone who is missing stuff the complete series of both with the restored sound. On the other, it may end up hurting sales of the individual seasons since people who know now won't spend money since they are waiting for the complete series sets.

Very interested to see what the extras being offered will be.

Re: Shout Announces: Complete Series Sets for G.I. Joe, Transformers

I bet the individual set sales will suffer, but there will be people who don't want to plunk down a big chunk of money at once for the whole thing and it allows the people that have only some of the Rhino sets to "complete" their collection and not be "forced" to rebuy what they already own.

Where I give Shout! an absolute ton of credit is for announcing the complete series before any of the original sets are released for purchase. You don't see that kind of care for the consumer often, and that buys a ton of good faith in my book. Most companies would rather try to force the "double-dip" on consumers.

Wrong, David. Most consumers are on a budget and I suspect that the two sets will retail for $100 or more.

Most will probably be satisfied with buying them separately. Just look at Get Smart. Obviously, it's been proven that whole sets don't hurt the sales of separate sets.

Wrong, Mark. Most consumers for THIS GENRE will spend the money for the complete sets - especially if they have exclusive content, and they can get all of it NOW. These are people that will spend 250.00 on limited edition statues, 100.00 on high end toys and 3.99 each for 22 page comic books multiple times a month.

I've probably worked on more 80s cartoon DVDs than just about anyone and I know the consumer well. And Transformers and GI Joe are the absolute kings of the genre.

You can't equate these properties with other types of nostalgia or classic shows. They've had a huge subculture and constant media attention - new cartoons, movies, toys and peripherals from the day they first aired through today.

And yes, the Complete Get Smart hurt sales of the individual sets. Don't you think they'd have sold many more of the individual sets, if a huge part of the fanbase didn't already own the entire series - and in a better form? I'm not saying that the individual sets will tank or even lose money. Just that they'll be hurt because a huge percent of the diehards will opt for the complete set.

I will be skipping the individual releases in favor of the complete sets for both series. I too applaud Shout for their strategy.
The Rhino sets were never very attainable(short shelf life, especially for G.I. Joe) and were very expensive. Although I own all the Rhino releases, I am looking forward to the new sets. I will finally be able to complete my G.I. Joe cartoons. YES!!!!!

And now that we know the entire series are coming, this is probably the time to unload the Rhino stuff - while it still has some value.

CORRECT! These shows are off the charts(Toys, cartoon memories, fun) for me.
Here's a thread I created a while back:

I keep thinking the same thing. I only have the first 3 Rhino Transformers sets (S1 & S2), so I should probably sell them and get the complete series. It's just that they look so nice sitting on the shelf.

Re: Shout Announces: Complete Series Sets for G.I. Joe, Transformers

I sold off my original Transformers release sets for a nice profit after they went out of print, so I'm looking forward to picking up the whole series again.

Re: Shout Announces: Complete Series Sets for G.I. Joe, Transformers

Just heard an interesting little follow-up via newsarama.com.

Seems a direct-to-video DVD for My Little Pony will be out shortly too as part of the deal with Hasbro with GI Joe and Transformers. Has me wondering if we might get reissues of MLP as well as Joe and Transformers.

Hey, my fiance liked MLP, so why shouldn't she have fun too?

Shout! Factory Community - The Definitive Transformers Thread

Shout! Factory's Brian Ward has just posted a thread giving the rundown for the upcoming release. The most interesting parts that he talks about here are the masters and the audio.

Anyone get this yet?

I caved in last night and ordered it.  Having the complete G.I. Joe run in one box is absolutely awesome and I couldn't resist.

I'll be sure to post my thoughts if nobody does before me.

Universal, please release Streets of Fire on Blu-ray.

I actually have both sets. I just couldn't resist either.

They are really awesome. The packaging for both is really cool, although I personally find Joe a bit cumbersome. Opening that inner lid for the first time is a bit like prying open the Ark of the Covenant, given all the disc sets are right underneath. But the bonuses for all, but in goodies and on the discs are top drawer. Nice of Shout! to include a tray for GI Joe The Movie too, given they didn't produce it. Good luck tracking it down if you don't already have it though.

All and all, great sets, both Joe and Transformers, perfect for fans. Now, about those movies... ;)

EDIT: The cartoons, not the live action movies.
