Rock Revolution

When I saw Rock Revolution (PS3 edition) for under $10 brand new, I took a shot. Reviews have been terrible -- GameStop employees have even warned me against buying it! -- but the track list is so utterly genius, I couldn't resist.

And you know what? The guitar gameplay is just fine. (I don't have a drum kit so I can't comment on that.) The songs are all covers, but they're decent. And the selection is easily the closest of any music game to my personal tastes, with lots of metal and some classic and prog rock. Even the '80s hair metal tracks are great choices. And the recent songs are solid too -- things like "Chop Suey" and "Paralyzer" are fun to play even if they're not what I usually listen to.

I do wish it had vocals though. The reason I heard is that they didn't want to "cannibalize" the Karaoke Revolution series, but that doesn't make sense because I don't think any of these songs ever made it into any karaoke game.

In my opinion, this game got a very unfair rap. Sure, it's not as polished as GH or RB, but it was released as a $20 budget title. That's cheaper than a RB Track Pack disc! For someone like me, who just wants to fire up Quickplay mode and jam on the songs I enjoy, it's great (especially considering that none of the songs are locked -- they're all available to play from the get-go).

Re: Rock Revolution

Was it released as a $20 title? I thought it was full price up until recently and the price shot down because nobody bought it.

You don't sound like you were really in the market for RB or GH to begin with, but for someone who is really into this type of game then going with Rock Revolution would be flat out disappointing. What other RB/GH/RR style games have you played?

Re: Rock Revolution

I'm pretty sure it was selling for $20 the week it came out (unless the price drop happened almost immediately, which is unlikely).

Speaking of which, I got the original GH the week it came out, before anybody had heard of it. I walked into Best Buy with a friend and saw a big display of it (I think it might've actually been a couple of days ahead of the official release date, in fact). I took one look and had to have it!

I have GH1 and GH2 for PS2, GH3 and GH: Aerosmith for PS3, RB1 for PS3, and a big stack of PS2 Karaoke Revolution and SingStar games (should I mention Frequency? ). So I'm not exactly a babe in the woods when it comes to music games. I should say, though, that for me these are technically more toys than games, since my interest is in jamming to and singing songs I enjoy rather than getting high scores or beating hard difficulty levels.

I used to play keyboard, guitar, and bass, and sing, but I am YEARS out of practice (and wasn't very good to begin with ). I love playing music, but I simply don't have time to get back into playing. These games are just what the doctor ordered!

Re: Rock Revolution

I remember playing Frequency on a demo kiosk at Circuit City. The day Amplitude came out was one of my happiest days in high school. Speaking of which, if you have a PSP, look into Rock Band Unplugged, as it's pretty much Amplitude.

After doing a little research, it seems Rock Revolution was disliked mostly because of how it treated the drums. Since you're not using the drums, that must be why you're enjoying it more. Also, the game came out in October and only sold 3,000 copies in North America that month. That might explain the extremely low price, because it definitely came out at full price back then. A quick check of Google Shopping (I miss calling it Froogle) shows the game still being sold for $50 in some places. Heck, the DS version is over $30.

Re: Rock Revolution

That makes sense. And I miss "Froogle" too.

BTW, I somehow forgot to mention that I also have Rock Band: AC/DC (with DVD and t-shirt).
