I'm wondering if the Jays will deal Halladay within their division/league...

I know I wouldn't. Things are tough enough.

I'm thinking the Jays have to be blown away by an offer before they deal Halladay and if the best offer came from the Sox or Yanks, they'll make the deal. Remember, the Yanks got Cone and Clemens from Toronto. However with that being said, the Sox or Yanks aren't getting Halladay unless they give up Buchholz, Joba or Hughes. I don't think a Bowden, Masterson, McAllister or somebody in that class of prospect is going to do. It's going to take at least 2 "A" prospects and a couple of "B" prospects.

there are reports that the phils are this close to signing Pedro.

please Phils don't sign Pedro.
If this happened they would surely be out of the running for Halladay.

Tony: if you've never watched Pedro pitch much...you are in for a treat.

He's a wizard. He's a wizard on the downside, but as he showed during the WBC, he's still got "it."

Mike,

I heard last night that the Jays are probably not going to let Halladay sign with any team in the AL East. I didn't know that they had that kind of control over whom he signs with.

The BoSox bullpen let us down yet again tonight. Delcarmen and Ramirez have been mediocre at best lately.

Since Halladay is still under contract to the Jays, they've got every bit of say over where he goes for the duration of that contract.

A disappointing loss indeed tonight. They've got to do better than that.

Doc has veto power over any trade, just like Peavy with the Padres. Peavy's already veto'd a trade or two the Padres wanted to do. i think it was Chicago or Phillie or both?

Sure. The fact that both sides need to agree really limits things. I was just responding to Scott's point about the Jays control over where Halladay goes.

Remy's said there were times in spring training where Pedro would tell the batter his changeup was coming, and the batter would still swing and miss. For 3-4 years in his prime, he was the best I've ever seen . . . and I saw Clemens in his prime. Pedro was Clemens, with 2 more out pitches.

Exactly. Jerry, first with McDonough, and now with Orsillo, knows that some games are just plain boring, and no "Here's my excited over dramatic voice!" call of a routine fly is going to change that. So they joke and laugh, and check out girls, and make fun of the people in the luxury seats, and make general chit chat, just to liven things up. As I've said before, they know a liner to right in a 10-2 game is not the same as a walk off home run in the 9th. Too many announcers think their call is what makes the game, instead of the game dictating their call.

My favorite was when they were speculating that Manny used the "facilities" in the Wall, and every time they brought up Tavarez. They should have kept Julian just for the laughs that nut brought to the booth.

PS - By the way Mark, were you watching last night when Eck blurted out the answer to the AFLAC quiz? Don didn't even wait until the bottom of the inning, he just said "Since Eck ruined it for all, we might as well show the answer now." and they put the answer up.

i don't watch alot of Sox broadcasts, but i remember last year there was an old guy with a thick new england accent, who was that? i haven't heard him in a while.Submit
also, Heidi Watney - WOW. (not as hot as Erin Andrews, but in the same ballpark (pun intended)

Although he'd rebuff the "old" part (he's a young 56), that would be Jerry Remy. He was born in Fall River and grew up in Somerset, and he was on some of the teams (like '78) that really, really hated the Yankees (and he still does). Unusual for a Red Sox player, his game was bunting and speed. He was also tough as nails and would stand in at 2nd and take a clean out in order to make a play. This led to many knee injuries, which led to his demise from the game after 9 seasons.

Damn, I was watching at a bar and couldn't hear...I can just hear the laughter. LOL

At first, I was so upset that Eck was filling in (because he was so dull at first), but he and Don have had some pretty funny conversations....but definitely nothing like the Rem Dawg. I love when Jerry will do one inning where he throws off the commentator role and just cheers on the Sox. LOL - Those are classic.

That was a routine catch anyone could have made in their sleep.

Okay, so the Sox won their game tonight, 15-9. I'm still concerned about their bullpen, and I think I have good reason to be. Smoltz pitches really well (he left with a 9-1 lead -- that's two consecutive starts whereby he's pitched quite well), yet Masterson and Delcarmen come in and give up five runs. And to top it off, Okajima (where is the 2007 version of this man, anyway?) comes in and gets a strikeout to end the inning, but then gives up a homer and two singles to the first three batters the next inning, only to be bailed out by Bard (thank goodness). Methinks the Red Sox bullpen is keeping other teams around too long. This is not a bullpen that is getting the job done in many instances.

Addendum: And Bard gives up two more runs in the top of the eighth.... The Red Sox lead 9-1, and give up eight runs in three innings? I'm thankful that they have responded with some firepower of their own in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings; otherwise, this game could have been quite depressing ... and even more ugly than it already is (four errors, and I think one of them was changed back to a hit).

I joked with a friend (when I saw Masterson pitching with a 9-1 lead) and said "Well, at least he can give up his 5 runs and the Sox would still be ahead!

I've actually been rather impressed with Masterson since last year, and into this year. For the most part, he's been pitching rather well. I don't know what happened yesterday. Maybe some of the credit ought to go to the Royals.

As for Delcarmen (and Ramirez, for that matter), I have no idea.

I love the All-Star Game. Always have.

It has always seemed so cool that players who don't really know each other can still take the field as a team and play a reasonably sound game. Most major leaguers seem to "get" the honor of being selected and getting to play in the game (even in this day and age of the overpriced, jaded athlete). And, for those who don't "get it"...too bad. It's their loss.

I am baffled by those who think the over-hyped ESPN home run derby contest has somehow become more popular than the All-Star Game itself. I don't have anything against the idea of a home run derby. I played countless games of wiffleball HR derby as a kid and loved the old TV series (great on DVD, BTW!). And, I'll usually watch--even if it means having to suffer through the ungodly pairing of Chris Berman and Joe Morgan to do it (who EVER came up with that?!?) and the obnoxiously late starting time (VERY BAD for kids to be able to enjoy).

But there's something magical about an All-Star Game. Whether it's the pre-game activities honoring past players (I cannot believe it's been ten years since the '99 game at Fenway and they brought Ted Williams onto the field before the game among all the current players). Or, whether it's the fun of watching players from rival teams enjoy each other's company on the dugout steps as the game progresses. Not to mention the awesome match-ups that can be found during the game of the best pitchers from each league facing the best hitters from the other league (another reason I can't stand interleague play).

I wish home field advantage for the World Series wasn't connected to the All-Star Game. A return to the rotating schedule or, better yet, best regular season record would be preferred.

But what a terrific moment in any baseball season--when the best players get together and show off their stuff against the rest of the best.

Same here. As I say every year, I still think the All-Star Game in baseball is the only one worth watching. The ones in other sports are almost as laughable as an all-star version of a reality show. And it remains an honor to be in one, unlike football, where it seems like half of the players selected end up backing out.

Also, I like the fact that it's held every year, and in MLB venues only.

Hearing the starting lineups announced, somehow takes me back to the days of collecting baseball cards. I used to thought the All-Star version of the cards would be worth more than the regular ones.

love the game too. and the HR derby is WAAAY too long. the thing should be 90 min tops. but whatever. if i had to change the actual game, i'd say leave the starting lineup in for at least the first 6 innings. i don't like seeing replacements starting to trickle in after 4. and i'd like to see the starting pitcher pitch more than 2 innings. while alot of people hate the "1 per city" rule, i dislike the "everyone has to play" unspoken rule even more. leave the best players out there.

You're joking, right? How could the American League possibly win the game if Bay, Beckett, Papelbon, Pedroia (assuming he were able to play), Wakefield, and Youkilis were the only players to play for the American League? I think that's asking a bit much, even for them.
