The concourses were too small, the bathrooms smelled BEFORE the game started. Food was not so hot (figuratively and literally). Getting there by car was a PITA (not fixed by new ballpark). BUT IT WAS YANKEE STADIUM !! That's all that mattered, even though it was re-done in the '70s, it was the same hunk of real estate.
Before the new stadium was built I read that it was physically impossible for the old carcass to support more luxury boxes. That in my mind was the real reason for the new ball park. To keep the same real estate they would have had to flatten the old place, then found some place to play while the construction was taking place. With the Mets looking to replace Shea that was probably not realistic. So, they had to build a new place while the old one was still in service. No big deal, just grab a park facility from the people in the poor neighborhood. Looks like they went from around 50K people per night to 40K+. It would be nice to know if the jacked up prices cover for the lost attendance.

Hell, Sox fans will actually PAY good money for that type of experience. I guess it's a reminder of how the way games used to be. It wasn't pretty back in the day and that's what people want to experience when they go to the ballpark (well, at least the REAL fans do). If you want luxury, then stay the F*** home!!

On a side note: I went to Fenway back in 2005. I got tickets from a friend that had season tickets. The seats were near 1st base and they were aisle seats that were in the first row right after the walkway. We were on the end, right next to the tunnel. (If the attached photo works, we were in section 115)

For the first 5 innings, we could barely see the game because of the mass amounts of people that kept walking by. Most of them would come out of the tunnel and stand right in front of us to watch the play before they went to their seats.

The guy right behind us had season tickets at that spot for YEARS and kept yelling "Down in FRONT!" through the first 5 innings. We kept laughing at him because he wasn't really all that angry. We talked to him about the situation and he actually loved it and seemed to enjoy yelling at them. To him, it was "the Fenway experience" and I bet he wouldn't have had it any other way.

And that's what makes Fenway park so memorable and unique.

Mark, I once sat front row of sec 123, which are great seats, but they also face directly down the 3rd baseline to The Wall, and it is the first section not behind the netting. All I saw in front of me were asses and elbows taking pictures of The Wall. I finally got fed up and started yelling "The Wall ain't going anywhere between innings, get your friggin pictures then!!!"

I went to Stankee Yadium a million times in the late '90s and early '00s (sitting in many different places, including a luxury box), and it was great. Luxury Boxes are the reason it was torn down, pure and simple.

Much as it pains me to say it, for the most part the abuse we took there was in better taste than the abuse I've seen dished out at Fenway.

On the topic of Yankees ticket prices, it's good to know people (or have a friend who knows people). I just got a couple tickets at face value to a game next month at the Stadium from a season-ticket holder who wasn't using the tickets that night. Apparently, not much demand for a Yankees-Nats game on a Wednesday night. Shocking.

On another note, with the walk-off HR Johnny Damon just hit in the 10th inning, today is the sixth straight day at least one game in MLB has ended in a walk-off HR. With a limited slate of games tomorrow, it may be tough to make it to a week.

Just returned from St. Louis, and I would experience my first rainout and got standing room, from First Pitch in another game. But I ended up sitting in an empty seat in that game, because my feet were hurting big time! Sucks that there are no refunds for rained out games, and I can't attend the makeup game

But it is a nice stadium, and I was told that fireworks go off after every Cardinal victory. Well, I wouldn't know, because they lost the 2 full games I was at.

Happy to hear the Phillies swept this weekend.

Is it September yet? It seems like it the way the Mets handed the Dodgers last night's game on a silver platter.

How does Ryan Church, in a tie game in the 11th inning, not touch the base as he rounds 3rd heading home with the go-ahead run?

Followed by this walk-off blunder in the bottom of the inning.

Some good commentary by Scully in those clips (but what else would you expect?)

I've had xm for a few years now and have had chances to listen and it's terrific.
Bob Euker for the brewers is really good too.

I loved Euker in Major League. ... he led the league in most offensive categories including nose hair. Every time he sneezes he looks like a party favor
Not to mention the 'Great seats, eh Buddy?' beer commercial. Which to me led to a noun 'we got 2 Eukers to Saturday's game' and a verb 'Man, I just Eukered'
He also has a great methodology for catching knuckle ball pitchers: 'just wait till the ball stops rolling and pick it up'

I, too, have grown used to the YES mess of some combination of Kay, Singleton, O'Neil, Cone, Flaherty, Leiter, Dewey, Cheatum & Howe.

They really missed out on not getting Jimmy Kaat back when he became available again.

I got the chance to catch Scully again in action a few years ago when I got a free preview of the MLB package when I still had Time-Warner cable service. I remember that he used to be part of the NBC team when NBC had most of the MLB contracts decades ago (along with people like Joe Garagiola, Tony Kubek, Curt Gowdy, etc.) It was like taking a walk in the park on an especially beautiful day. What delight. There wasn't the constant effort to fill every second of air time with "insight and analysis." Things happened, Scully simply reported them (didn't feel the need to hit you over the head with the obvious) and provided his own expert insight when warranted. I had actually forgotten what it could be like. Dodgers fans are blessed.

Those, and the possibility of the BoSox again playing the Angels (or another west coast team) in the playoffs, or those Rays into all hours of the night at Fenway. Remember that 14-inning affair against the Rays last year? Thank you, Mr. Pena, for that three-run home run in the 14th. Ugghh. Not easy to hit the sack after one of those matchups. But it sure was an exciting game.

Although I like Timlin from several years ago, my heart sank when he was brought in to pitch that inning. I told my son at the time, it's over.

How did Papi's HR look, Mark? I saw the highlights of Tuesday night's game and he looked as lost as can be at the plate. Dare I say he looked as lost as Varitek did in most of his at-bats last year. He was late on everything.

Sure would be nice to see him get red hot now. Francona had just predicted that very thing earlier in the week. We'll see.

The Yankees sure are red-hot right now. They are on quite a run. John Sterling was practically apoplectic last night. If any Yankee fan didn't see Phil Mushnick's column on Sterling a few days ago...

Mike, his first at bat was not pretty, but his homer looked great! He just barely made it into the camera area straight out in center field. Fenway went NUTS! Eckersly had a great line. He said something like "Everyone here at Fenway was blowin' on that ball to get out of here."

Hopefully that will get the monkey off his back and he can settle down now and get back to his old self.

there was a mention in one of the early national broadcasts that the dimensions might be
incorrectly marked on the walls, shorter then whats posted.

This happened at citizen's bank park.
the numbers were incorrectly, marked on the walls and had to be changed.

I had to get to work before I could post today. I was also caught up in the Cavaliers - Magic game.

I saw the home run. I guessed (wrongly) that it was to right field. When I saw the highlights on ESPN, it was almost to dead center. I didn't think it was a home run when I saw it leave the bat, but fans behind home plate seemed to know right away.

The home run is fine and all, but I'd rather Papi go another 175+ at-bats without a home run so long as the BoSox keep winning. They're doing very well against the East thus far.
