Yeah...the way I heard it, when a player has been using steroids his body stops producing testosterone naturally on it's own. So when he stops, the body's not naturally making it on it's own any more and they use this drug to give it a kick-start.

On another note, the Yankees have lost both of their catchers due to injury (Posada & Molina). Their Triple-A catcher can't be brought up because he's also hurt! So their AA catcher, Francisco Cervelli, will be their main man for awhile. That's pretty rough.

I wonder if Girardi would consider suiting up?!? John Flaherty is probably waiting by his phone, too!

Ah, I was assuming they meant that their levels go down after they stop taking steroids, but I didn't realize it shuts down completely when they are taking them.

That really sucks. I feel so dirty for cheering for him. Thank god I don't care for him anymore

By the way, Mike, I assume you don't get NESN? They interviewed some of the players before last nights game and Ortiz's comments were interesting. He was basically saying that Manny's in LA and he's in Boston and that they haven't talked since he left. It sounded like Big Papi was like "Whatever!!".

Mike Lowell basically said "If you're dumb enough to take something without having it tested first, then you're an idiot."

The rest of the guys had the standard "we won't pass judgment until more info is out"

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I wish Ortiz could just forget that Manny ever existed. I am convinced that the reason he's been slumping for a good part of the early season is that he's still focused on the fact that Manny's bat is not behind his in the lineup (even though he's only got a guy batting .400 batting there instead!).

And no I don't get NESN, Mark. That's one of the banes of my existence! I lisen to Castiglione and O'Brien a lot on my computer!

Interesting theory. I never thought of that. But he was in a slump last season when Manny was around, so I don't know. I'm wondering if his wrist is 100%.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I don't get the amount of Boston media coverage as most Red Sox fans...but that is ALL I've heard from him in any of the stories I've heard. He practically has seemed obsessed with Manny's absence. From where I sit, it seems definite that it's gotten in his head. But what do I know?

A buddy has told me that Kevin Cash (former Sox) will be catching for the Yanks (maybe even tonight). I wonder if he was unattached and the Yanks just picked him up? I can't find any mention of this anywhere...but I guess some Fantasy site is quoting info gleaned from the Daily News.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I never read one story that even hinted at Ortiz being "obesessed" with Manny's absence. Matter of fact, Ortiz pretty much understood that he had to go and took a "turn the page" attitude when it happened. I don't know what media you were hearing Mike, but it definitely wasn't what I heard.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I never heard anyone in the media opine about it. It was the way Ortiz has been answering questions about his ineffectiveness since the wrist injury last year. Maybe he was originally using Manny as a red herring to distract from the injury at first...but I've still heard Ortiz evoke Manny's name as recently as a couple of weeks ago. It's been the one constant thing I've heard coming from him over the past several months. But, like I said earlier, I don't have access to nearly as much media coverage as most of you fellas do.

That's why I've been saying that it seems to me that it's in his head...almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. His bat seems to be coming around though...so here's hoping it's all moot.

He's expected back in the line-up tonight.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I haven't seen or read any interviews from Ortiz, so I can't make a judgment call, but I was very surprised to hear him talk about Manny like that last night.

Like Jeff said, he had sort of a "write him off" attitude. His tone was very "What the hell do I care? He's not here anymore; so it's no longer any of my concern."

Of course, that could be a cover up for missing the guy. Like when a girlfriend leaves you, you don't want her to, but your attitude is like "Well fine! Then leave!"

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

I was thrilled to see the BoSox take a series from the Rays. Tampa Bay really does play us tough.

Papelbon walked a batter, allowed him to get to second on a throwing error to first, and after a single, the Rays had runners on first and third with nobody out. Then a strikeout, a steal, and two more strikeouts. Papelbon strikes out the side! Pena, Upton, and Crawford aren't the easiest guys to get out. That was awesome.

Yeah, I just don't get that. The Sox play almost every other team very well except for the Rays. It's mind blowing how the Rays went from "an easy win" to this.

I was watching an interview with one of the Rays players and Hedi was asking him how come they hit so well against Boston. He didn't have an answer, but said that it's probably because they see Boston so often and get a good feel on how they play....I don't know. They're turn around is just too good. I almost smell some sort of "stealing signs".

It gets even weirder -- Tampa is 6-4 against the Sox and 9-14 against everybody else!

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Yeah, I'd like to pitch Wakefield against them most of the time, if I could.

Well, the BoSox don't see the Rays again until August. They've played ten of the eighteen games (6-4 Tampa, as Aaron mentioned) thus far that they have with them during the regular season. Right now, the BoSox are 5.5 games ahead of the Rays. I'm hoping by August that Boston has (give or take a game) a thirty game lead over Tampa Bay.

Now it's on to the West Coast and the Angels.... We've already won out there this year, so I'm hoping we can do it again. Those brooms weren't looking all that appealing last year to me -- except of course, once we got to the playoffs. Then the Angels are a little league team when they play the BoSox. J/K.

Gosh...Johan Santana just can't catch a break. The Mets bullpen blows up on him again as he leaves a game in a 1-1 tie in the 7th inning. Reminds me of what used to happen to Pedro so many times (both with the Sox and the Mets).

Reyes (shortstop) committed an error that opened the flood gates, I believe all the runs in the 7th were un-earned.

I heard on the radio this morning that in Santana's last two starts his ERA is 0.00 and he has ended up with two losses!!

i thought he won the previous start against the Phils.

Just checked, he did so that info is wrong.
He was 2-1, then beat the phils last week 1-0 then lost last night.
he is 4-1.

It's not his last two starts, it's just his two losses this year he's given up a total of 0 ER. Which really sucks for my fantasy team - points can add up quickly with wins. Same thing happened with Greinke this weekend, a 1-0 loss. These pitchers' good games with Ls are killing me.

And since this thread has basically turned into a Red Sox love fest, here's something for the Sox fans to chew on:

Thanks for clarifying, Scott. I might have gotten it wrong then by not paying close enough attention.

For the record, me too. Or historical players. Or statistics.

I really don't want this to become just about the BoSox or the AL East..even though that's where my greatest interest lies.

Not at all, Mark. Not at all. Bring it on!

Like the others, I had noted that the conversation had gotten really one-sided about the Red Sox. I certainly don't want to stop talking about the Sox...but I've just been trying to encourage fans of other teams to chime in!

For goodness' sake, there's thirty teams in MLB! I know the Red Sox are the best of them all...but I want to hear about the others, too!

Well...I was thinking in the "big picture." There are so many criteria!

I wish the Sox had been able to make it to the series last year against the Phillies. That would have been fun.

As research, I actually re-watched much of game 5 of the 2008 ALCS just a few days ago. What fun! That was the game the Sox came back from being down 7-0 in the 7th inning to eventually win 8-7.
