Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Among the things baseball should prohibit (along with the obvious like the Designated Hitter and instant replay): alternate uniforms.

For Earth Day:

Friday night home jerseys:

Alternate cap:

Alternate away jerseys:

Those Celtic green unis are garish. None of this should be allowed.

I am SUCH a stick-in-the-mud!

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

The only issue I had with the green uniforms was incorporating so much red into them...what is this Earth Day or Christmas??

Somehow green Red Sox jerseys makes me think of the result of mixing green and red paint. Yuck!

Seeing all that green at Fenway, I would thought the NBA decided to have an outdoor game.

I like the green Celtic uniforms as solidarity with the Celtics!

Maybe the Celtics could start wearing red socks, instead!

Well, that was a great comeback for the BoSox against the Bronx Bombers tonight. When it was 4-2 in the eighth, and then the ninth, I was beginning to think the series wasn't going to start out all that well. But then Bay hits a two-out two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie it, and Youkilis hits the game-winning home run in the bottom of the eleventh to win it!

I have to say, I think the Royals are somewhat screwed; our manager does crazy things and we just aren't there yet as a team. But, there are few things I've enjoyed more then watching Grienke hit the mound. That kid is unbelievable.

No kidding, that must be great to see. And the one run that scored while he was pitching yesterday was ... unearned! What's his stuff like? I haven't followed him at all, and no little about him. I'm guessing he has four pitches, and can mix them up really well?

And there's one more reason to go out and catch some games in San Francisco these days.....

Vintage Base Ball - back to the 1880s

I'll bet Frezon would love it. He could sit in the press box and give a play-by-play over one of his antique telephones.

He's really kind of a freak. He is not a hard-thrower, but he throws what a lot of other pitchers would look at as trash but it's baffling. In the series against Texas, he had a pitch count that went:

Fastball: 95
Fastball: 96
Slow-Pitch thing he throws: 67

Quote:
In one sequence of pitches on Saturday, Greinke followed a 96 mph fastball with a 69 mph curveball. Tony Randazzo, the home plate umpire, remarked to Olivo in the middle innings, "He's got good stuff.

Buster Olney: Zack Greinke might be ready to win a Cy Young - ESPN

(ESPN says 69, but the KC Star and others listed it as 67)

Now, if you're the batter, that's the most confusing thing you see. Fastball (first was a foul) fastball (strike) so you're ready. And then the pitch comes by THIRTY MPH slower. It's just strange, because the batter goes damn near all the way around before the ball crosses the plate. Grienke doesn't throw that one often, but the fact that he can keeps people off guard because they don't know what's coming. It's because his pitches are so drastically different from each other that makes him a challenge to a hitter.

He once told a batter that he'd throw a 50MPH curve. And got bagged for it. Did EXACTLY that after throwing a slider/fastball and had him totally turned around.

The kid suffered some bad years with the royals.. times he just got beat up everytime he went out, losing 1-0 and 2-0, and he started to really "press" because he felt he constantly had to be flawless and it screwed up his early career. I think he's more comfortable in his own skin. And I think if he plays this way, there are going to be a lot of offers to move him elsewhere to a team that can win unless the Royals get in the mix.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

was Burnett tipping his pitches? all of a sudden it seemed like the Sox were laying off that low curve and sitting on the fastball, when earlier they were just flailing away... plus how small was that strike zone? too bad the ref totally blew that call on the stolen base in the 8th(?) but Papelbon probably would have closed it anyways.

Matt,

I think if I saw a 69 (or 67) m.p.h. curve ball coming at me, I would think it was a change-up. Maybe that's part of his magic thus far.

Eric,

I was not able to see the game in my area. Are you talking about the blown call at second base where the Red Sox runner was tagged out, or another play involving a Yankee runner? The Sox runner was called safe (and he was out), but since the Yankees didn't score again, I don't think it would have mattered.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Remember all the complaints from last week about the new Yankees Stadium being an "bandbox" for lots of home runs? After the Yankees pitching got shelled by those Red Sox hitters in the last two games, maybe it's the Yankees' pitching that is the problem right now.

yeah i was talking about the Red Sox stolen base in the 8th. it was the difference between 1 out + empty bases and 1 on and no out. at the time the Sox were up by (only) one run.

Yes, I heard about that last night watching the game. Pettitte is susceptible to that, owing (as the announcer said) to his leg kick and overall delivery.

BTW, that was Pettitte's first loss at Fenway since 2002.

I think it's much more due to his occasional lack of attention to runners at third.

Of course, he probably didn't pitch much at Fenway when he was on Houston from 2004 through 2006. Sometimes I think KNOW announcers recite these stats without thinking too much about them.

I think the steal of home is the most exciting play in baseball.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

Woot Woot. Pirates 4 games above .500 - first time since 2002 this late in the season. Pretty pathetic isn't it? But, they have been getting some timely pitching and hitting which they have universally lacked...

Funny - heard that the Yanks were last in ERA. Bucs were near the top last time I looked. Lineup cost that they tropped out last night against the Padres. 12.3M. Total. Of course, three starting fielders are hurt, so I am not counting on this keeping up, but...

Maybe, maybe this is the year that they actually finish above .500 - I know, pretty lame, but since it hasn't happened since 1992 it would be a big deal.

Hey, Randy...you take whatever your favorite team gives you, right?!?

It would be a nice turnaround for the Pirates to finish above .500....especially given what management has sunk into the team (or hasn't sunk).

I take what I can get...but it's been a really rough road the last 15 seasons of futility...the sad thing is that they have one of the nicest stadiums going, but the product has been horrid...

I was at their last home playoff game in '92 and it was a fun time...they the again flirted with .500 back in '97....don't think that they have been close since...

Everyone once in awhile Mark Cuban would show up at a game - native Pittsburgher - and there would be a huge outcry for him to buy the team. Problem was - they weren't/aren't for sale...

Nutting family is doing well enough at being horrible from a bottom line standpoint and given the fact that you can invest crazy cash and still not win, it's a tough sport to follow as a diehard. I am a huge Steeler fan and rabid Pens as well. Baseball is third tier for me for sure...

That being said.

Let's go BUCS!

Just before Conan O'Brien stopped doing his late-night show, he showed a lot of "best-of" material. IIRC, his on-location bit about an old-time baseball league was voted his #1 sketch of all time (better than Triumph at the Phantom Menace premiere!).

You can watch it here.

Interestingly, Pettitte said he was paying attention to Ellsbury at third right before the play. Hmmm.

During a recent MLB game that was televised last week, the announcers said that a home run was hit by a batter with the first name of Micah off of a pitcher with the first name of Micah. It was the first time in MLB history that a batter with the first name of Micah had hit a home run off of a pitcher with the first name of Micah. To me, this is a far more useful statistic than on-base percentage, Cobb's lifetime .367, or The Splendid Splinter's 521 home runs. And Mike Frezon agrees with me.

It surely is a thing of beauty. I also love a no-hitter, a suicide (non-safety) squeeze, and of course, the triple play.

BTW, I had the privilege of listening to a game years ago where a pitcher had four strikeouts in one inning. This man played for the Red Sox ca. 1966-70, but did not achieve this feat with Boston. Bonus points for anyone who can name the pitcher. I used to have his baseball card, too.

The answer is not Tim Wakefield.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread

That was a masterful performance by Tim Wakefield tonight! He pitched seven innings of one-hit, shutout ball. DelCarmen was also effective in the eighth, and while Papelbon was a tad shaky in the ninth, he got the save. The BoSox win the first in Cleveland, 3-1.

it is if you're at the game, but not if you're watching on tv how often do they actually have that angle live? usually you only catch the last bit. (albeit the best part)
