ok i have a philips HTIB that Im trying to use with my cable and hdtv. the dvd works fine but I cant get sound with the cable/tv.

i have an optical connection on the tv but no coax.

I have a coax connection on the cable box but no optical.

i know theres an optical converter i can get but id have to order it so im trying to connect via the coax.

therefore i ran the coax from the cable box (instead of the tv since it had none) to the receiver but still no sound.

any idea why this does not work and/or what I should do.

thanks in advance.

Re: digital audio

You probably need to assign the coax input, to the TV/DBS. It will walk you through the assignment, in your owner's manual. Not hard. Just pay attention.

Re: digital audio

Ed's right. The digital connections on most receivers are not paired with video inputs, you need to make the assignment. The TV connections are irrelevant. The TV digital audio output cannot pass sound from other sources to your HTiB. It is only there for sending DD audio from the TV's internal tuner (received via the QAM cable input or the OTA antenna) to a receiver.

Re: digital audio

You need to post model #s. model # of the HTIB, model # and manufacturer of cable box, and your cable provider. It's conceivable that the digital out of the cable box has to be turned on via a setup menu.

Philips HTS3544 1000 watt 5.1

and motorola cable box DCH3416

i checked the input on the cable box and its on dolby digital for digital output.

surround for analog.

dynamic range narrow.

the rca cables from the cable box to receiver gives me sound from the tv input but the coax will not. i was trying to get the digital input to work, obviously but nothing doing.

Re: digital audio

Hmm, you seem to be doing the right thing, using DI input. What I would do:
- triple check that you are plugging into the correct jack on both sides, and that the connectors are pushed in all the way.
- try a different cable, maybe the cable is broken
- find some other equipment with a digital out to test on the HTiB. Borrow a friend's DVD player that has a coax dig out. If the DVD player doesn't work either, then probably your HTiB is broken. If it does work then try a cable box swap.
