If I get the Onkyo 606 w/ auto calibration, do I still need a sound meter?

Newb here. I've been told that I need a sound meter but the receiver I am buying has auto speaker calibration. Do I still need one?

Also, I do not plan on buying an EQ so how does one calibrate once one gets the data from the Avia DVD and sound meter?

Re: If I get the Onkyo 606 w/ auto calibration, do I still need a sound meter?

If you use the auto-calibration you don't need a sound meter. You then can't/won't use the Avia DVD to calibrate the sound, you will be relying on the receiver's own test tones, calibration program, and microphone. The receiver sets everything for you, all you do is plug in the microphone, follow directions on screen.

It's helpful to have a camera tripod on which to attach the microphone.

Read this post before running the Audyssey setup (auto EQ) on your 606.
