Upscaling/Reciever/Blu-Ray question

I admit it; I don't know a thing about HT so I would appreciate any help and advice anyone can provide.

My wife and I just built our HT room and are trying to figure out which system to buy. We have a new Mitsubishi tv that is 1080p so we want to maximize that. Our current thinking is to buy an a/v reciever because we want to hook up a Blu-Ray as well as PS2, a CD Player and maybe even our old VCR.

We will be hooking the reciever to the tv via HDMI.

We understand that some Blu-Rays upscale DVDs. If we get a Blu-Ray that does upscale, do we need a reciever that upscales? Would we need one that does "passthrough"?

Also, if we buy a reciever that upscales, would we be better off to hook a DVD player to it to watch DVDs or should we play those in a Blu-Ray.

Thanks.

In the scenario, you will want the receiver to pass thru the HDMI video signal from the BD player to the TV. Most new HDMI receivers will do this. Also, many (most?) receivers will not even allow you to upscale an HDMI signal -- they only upscale analog video signals. That is how my Pioneer Elite works, anyway.

Your 1080p TV will upscale any video signal to it's native 1080p signal anyway, so it will depend on which device does a better job of upscaling -- the BD player or the TV. Your DVD player will probably send either a 480i or 480p signal to the TV, which it will then upconvert to 1080p. The BD player will upconvert the DVD video to 1080p and then send it to the TV, which receives it as a native signal. Try both, and see which you like better.

Re: Upscaling/Reciever/Blu-Ray question

Scott:

Thank you for the reply. In order to have the sound of all my components come through the surround sound speakers rather than the TV, I’ll be hooking everything up to a receiver. If I understand you, it wont be necessary for my receiver to do the upscaling if we make sure the Blu-Ray will do that.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Upscaling/Reciever/Blu-Ray question

That is correct, Stuart. The BluRay player will upconvert SD-DVD's to 1080p for you, as long as you are using HDMI as your connection.
