Best version of The Red House? (1947, Edward G. Robinson)

Can anyone recommend the best version--video and audio-wise--of The Red House? Or are they all pretty much crap? If so, are there VHS versions that are any better?

Well, since it's fallen into public domain hell, it's in pretty battered shape. Save a major restoration, I'd say go with the acmedvdworks disc which is (was?) distributed by VCI Entertainment. It's far from pristine but, alas, the best of the worst.

I have the VCI ACME double feature also - and it the best I've seen. Oddly enough my little brother picked up the Alpha version (thinking it was a horror film I guess) - and I compared the quality to the VCI.... I'd stay far away from the Alpha.

The Acme DVD release is not great but it is watchable (Catalog# 5011, UPC# 089859501128). I had a VHS version which was unwatchable and had a faulty Hi-Fi soundtrack. How did a great little movie like The Red House end up in the Public Domain? I always liked "Tibby", the 1947 bad girl, pretty racy for her day.

Looks like we will never see a proper restoration of this film because who knows where the original elements are today, if they even exist anymore. Probably in someone's basement waiting to be rediscovered.
