Lighting Options in HT / games room

Hi,
I'm in the process of designing an HT / Games room in my basement. I'm concerned about sound transmission to the floor above. Should I try and stock woth wall mounted lighting? Will ceiling mounted or pot lights allow more sound transmission?

Re: Lighting Options in HT / games room

can lights can be a place to allow more sound transmission. you can take some steps to mitigate it though. If you do use can lights, make sure you buy the IC version. These are rated to be okay when in contact with insulation. Then make sure you insulate well around the can. Its also not a bad idea to get your subwoofer in there before you drywall. Get some different bass tones going and see if there are any rattles you need to fix. can lights mounting arms can buzz. if you find anything, you can tape it, or crimp it with pliers. Once you have eliminated any offending culprits, you can remove the sub and drywall away!

Re: Lighting Options in HT / games room

When we built our house we put 6 can lights in our living room which is located under my 16yr old son's bedroom. I was unaware of the IC can lights that brandonchenry mentioned and we had to keep any insulation 12" from the light. Trust me - sound easily gets through.

Now the theater is in the basement under the living room. We have no can lights, only wall mounted, and we used a drop ceiling. For the most part we can not hear much in the living room. There is the bass rumbling, but it more sounds like distant thunder.
