Re: Possible to hook-up receiver without sub?
With modern receivers it is no longer necessary to have speakers connected to all of a reciever's speaker outputs to prevent damage to the receiver. (This wasn't usually true in the very early days of receivers in the 1960's). Therefore the answer to the title of this thread is "yes."
Of course, depending on the ability of your regular speakers to reproduce lower frequencies, the resulting sound might not approach the fullness of your eventual 5.1 setup. Most receivers have speaker configuration settings that allow you to specify the presence or lack thereof of a Subwoofer and adjust the flow of frequencies accordingly to maximize the quality of the sound.
Enjoy your speakers and receiver now and anticipate even greater enjoyment when the SVS arrives.
Hope this helps.

Re: Possible to hook-up receiver without sub?
I'd setup the receiver as though I had a sub and set the crossover to at least 40/60 or higher depending on your other speakers. Setting your speakers to Large and the sub to Off in the receivers speaker setup menu might cause you to seriously damage your other speakers by sending them bass frequencies they can't handle. then when you get your SVS you will enjoy it even more!
