New HDMI receiver suggestions

Sorry if I ask some dumb questions, newbie here.

So - I am currently looking to get a new receiver as my current Pioneer only has component.

I am hoping to stay around $350 and have been trying to do my own research but find that I am getting confused with what features I should demand and which are just fluff (this is opinionated, I know)

So - the receiver will be powering my Klipsch Quintet's (5.1 w/ ksw10). I am building a media center PC that will be the primary source of video and TV for this setup. Outputting to a 46-52" LCD (still trying to make up our mind on this piece as well).

I am open to any suggestions both on features and specific models of receivers. I have considered and researched many:

Yamaha RXV463
Yamaha RX V663
Onkyo TX-SR506
Onkyo TX SR606 (more $ than mentioned earlier)
Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K
Pioneer VSX-918V-K
Pioneer VSX-818V-K (my lack of understanding features accounts for the three Pioneers )

I could keep going, but I'll spare you all the time.

Not sure if worth mentioning, but I am in no rush to buy this if it means I may be able to scoop up a good deal on an "old" model in the next month or so

The main things I am set on are HDMI switching (no passthrough as I want audio as well, right?) Also, I think I would like to be able to output all sources to the TV via HDMI (including component, composite, etc...)

I am also confused on upscaling - is it necessary in a receiver or would a media center PC already handle this? Do TV's do this?

Codecs - where to begin. What is necessary? TrueHD? Or is Dolby 5.1 and ProLogic sufficient?

Clearly, I have read myself into a state of confusion.

Can anyone lend a hand for a newbie here and shed some light on the subject for me?

Thanks for any help on the matter!

Re: New HDMI receiver suggestions

You do not want HDMI "pass-through". You want receiver that handles the audio via HDMI. This rules out some of the models you have listed, including Pioneer 818, Onkyo 506.

IMO you want at least 3 HDMI for future expansion possibilities and more is better. This rules out last year's Yamaha RX-Vx63 models and the Pioneer 918; you should instead go for this year's RX-Vx65 models which have 4+ HDMI.

Upconversion/upscaling is not necessary in the receiver as the TV can do it. It depends on how important having a single cable to TV is to you, whether you have to connect old sources to TV. To me it is not a big deal, it is easy to run multiple cable to TV in my setup, and you have to pay a lot more for good upconversion IMO. Cheaper ones often have some limitation. I'd rather just have good universal remote (Harmony), switch both receiver & TV at the same time. I don't even have any non-HD sources anymore; I unplugged my VCR years ago, so I just run component + HDMI to my TV which covers everything.

Personally I would get Yamaha RX-V465 at that budget. Decide for yourself whether worth extra $100 for RX-V565 for possible future 7.1 speaker system and upconversion feature.

Re: New HDMI receiver suggestions

Thanks for the input, appreciated.

Between the YAMAHA RX-V465 and 565, obvioulsy the 565 is 7.1, but are there any other differences?

Looking at a comparison sheet they appear about the same. The only thing I noticed myself was that the 565 is listed having HDMI upconversion which, as I now understand, shouldn't really be a selling point, correct?

How can I tell, or can someone tell me, if either of two can output all sources over HDMI? From my limited understanding I would think the 565 could due to the upscaling feature, or am I way off here?

Thanks again!
