This is is probably a really basic question but Im a newbies so please bare with me.

On the back of my DVD player there is a a yellow video out socket next to the red and white phono sockets. On the back of my receiver there is a yellow video in socket in the same postion so, im guessing these go together.

what does this socket do and what sort of cable do i need to fit to it?

Re: Video Out socket on DVD player

The yellow RCA plug is for standard analog video or composite video. Besides the coax f-type connector, this is the most basic form of audio/video connector.

You can use any 75ohm RCA cable to connect the video output from your DVD player to your receiver. If you use this, you will also need to use a pair of regular RCA cables to connect the left and right audio (colored red and white). You can either buy a video cable (which comes with yellow RCA connectors on it) or you can buy a combo cable which has all three cables bundled together (yellow, red and white).

This configuration will get you where you need to go, however, if your DVD player and receiver both have the correct connectors, I would recommend using component video (red, blue and green connectors) and digital audio (either in the form of a single digital RCA cable or a Tos-Link fiber optic cable). These provide much improved audio and video compared to composite and analog audio.

Are you connecting the video out from the DVD player through the receiver to the TV or are you going to connect the DVD player's video straight to the TV?

Re: Video Out socket on DVD player

Stephen:

The video connections on your receiver (yellow composite, rgb component, s-video, HDMI if that is present) are all there so that you can connect the audio and video signals from all of your devices (DVD player, cable/sat box, game system, etc.) to the receiver and then run one video connection to the TV. This allows you to use the receiver to switch audio and video sources and leave the TV on one output.

The downside of this arrangement is that you have to have the receiver turned on in order to watch TV, but some of us don't consider that a problem. (And you can get around it by connecting some devices directly to your TV using other inputs.)

Re: Video Out socket on DVD player

I have a (quite old) Technics pro logic receiver which has 6 channel anolgue in but no optical or digital. My DVD player is quite basic so im only using the standard two channel audio at present. i already have this set up and running which sounds ok but I was just wondering what the vidoe out would add to this arrangement??

My DVD player is connected to the receiver by the audio channels and by scart to the TV.

The TV is not connected to the receiver but i do have a PVR which is connected up in the same way as the DVD.

Re: Video Out socket on DVD player

Video connection wouldn't add anything if you are using scart to TV. Video switching on receivers is essentially a convenience function, if you have multiple composite video devices you want to connect, then you can switch both audio/video with one button on the receiver. But scart is a better connection for video quality if the TV supports RGB.

Way past time to upgrade receiver though, prologic is obsolete for dozen years already. Dolby digital gives substantially better channel separation.

Re: Video Out socket on DVD player

Yeah i know but this receiver has been in my music studio for the last decade hooked up to my decks and pc. its only now that ive upgraded my amp in there that ive suddenly developed an interest in using this for home cinema and as im a new starter there are many other things (like a decent dvd player) that i need to get before i shell out the necessary for a new receiver.

reccomendations on a new dvd player thatll go with this receiver but also good for later upgrades gladly accepted
