How lomg does a Ficus tree last?

The Ficus tree I've had for seventeen years is losing leaves more frequently than usual, and I've had to prune a lot of bare branches recently. Then I asked myself:

How long do these things last?

It's also possible that the move to a new apartment hasn't helped matters much considering the new place receives a lot less light than the old place.

And it certainly lasted a lot longer than the second Ficus I bought at about the same time, which unfortunately died in two months. It was a hilarious sight to behold. I wanted to shake off the dead leaves by shaking the tree, and all the leaves fell off! It was like in a cartoon!

Spring is coming, so it's a good time to get a new plant if necessary. Still, I'll definitely miss that old tree once it's gone.

Ficus really don't like being moved. IIUC the leaves twist on their stems to align with the new direction of the sun, but sadly the stems are so brittle that they snap off instead.

I've had my two for fifteen years now and they're both doing great. Dennis is right. Ficus trees do not like being moved. At all.

I have one that's been growing out of the ground in my living room since the house was built in the 1970s. They did crazy stuff like that in the '70s.

I have someone come to prune it away from the skylite every year or two.

Have no idea how long they live, but the problem is definitely related to moving, they're very touchy.

If it's healthy enough to make it, it should start filling out again in a few months.

Had a similar shaking situation like you described, however I ended up with the Charlie Brown style tree, one little leaf was left. Kept it for another year or so, did get some new leaves, but never returned to its old self. Onto the compost heap.

To the admins: could one of you correct the title? It should be "long", not "lomg". Thanks!

As for the tree, I'll hold on to it for now. The pruning seems to have helped, and the longer days will give it more light.

It's funny. At the last place, not only did the tree get more light, it was also placed right next to one of the main speakers of my home theatre system. The sound waves seemed to have helped it out a bit, especially during action movies.

As for my palm tree (my other tree, ten years old), it's doing great in the bedroom. It won't be long before it touches the ceiling.

Now I have to find a couple of plants for my new office. And what a great time to get a new office. The city's outdoor public markets are almost ready to open up.
