Does Amazon Know Ahead About Future DVD Releases?

I don't know if this has been discussed so I will bring it up now. I have noticed that Amazon has certain TV Shows that it has sign up to be notified when this DVD becomes available. Does this mean that Amazon has advance word that these will be released? Here are 2 examples. Before Cannon Season 1 Volume 1 was released in July 2008, Amazon had put the sign up to be notified when Cannon becomes available on DVD. Sure enough Cannon was released in July of 2008. Another example I have noticed is Quincy Season 3. I don't know how long Amazon had sign up to be notified about Qunicy Season 3, but I know they had it and now we know for a fact that Universal will be releasing it in June. Is this just coincidence or does this indicate that Amazon does indeed have advance knowledge of a show's upcoming DVD release?

I'm fairly certain that "Sign up to be notified" means that they have no clue and it's basically a placeholder. When you can pre-order something is when they know it is coming.

If they knew in advance they would announce the actual release on the spot and would have a pre-order checkout. Being the industry giant they are they may have special privileges but I don't think they have a crystal ball, what they probably do is, once they have a list of upcoming releases for the day/week/month their system, or someone, updates the website with the new information and this is probably done automatically.

Re: Does Amazon Know Ahead About Future DVD Releases?

Someone told me a while back that in one case so many people had signed up to be notified when a release came out that the info was in fact passed along and the studio acted on it by eventually releasing the title.

Re: Does Amazon Know Ahead About Future DVD Releases?

No, they are just "placeholder" entries, so that should a title get released Amazon get to capture extra orders by emailing everyone who signed up expressing an interest in them.

Amazon creates these entries if , for example, they get customer enquiries about them. They also tend to create entries for further volumes as soon as any series gets a first season release. Others may also be created by MarketPlace sellers with, err, less than legit copies. For several years there was such an entry for Silverhawks!

Any entry that says "sign up if you're interested" means "we have no idea when or even if this will be released"

I've read the same thing and use that plus the voting section of tvshowsondvd.com to let studios know what I would purchase.

Re: Does Amazon Know Ahead About Future DVD Releases?

I still wonder if Amazon knows in advance. They do not have a sign up to be notified listing for Barnaby Jones. Yet, they had one in 2008 for Cannon and Cannon was released in July 2008. I would think that Amazon would have about as many, if not more requests for Barnaby Jones as they had for Cannon. So why isn't there a sign up to be notified for Barnaby Jones Season 1? Also, how long has the sign up to be notified listing for Quincy Season 3 been up? Why doesn't Amazon also have a sign up to be notified for MCCLOUD Season 3? Might the possible answers be that Amazon puts the sign up to be notified when they know it want be too long that a DVD will be coming out, based on their inside knowledge from the studios. Hence, the Cannon example in 2008 and the Quincy example in 2009. If this is the case, if and when Amazon puts a sign up to be notified listing for Barnaby Jones and MCCloud it would be reasonable to expect them to be released in the near future. Just speculation on my part.
