In wall subwoofer build

This is my first post here. I recently remodeled my home and added an area for a future built in subwoofer that already has a cloth covered grill that matches the color of the wall. My maximum dimensions are 15 3/8" W X 17 1/2" H X 22" D. What would be your recommended woofer and amp/wattage that would fit in this size hole? And also, would you recommend ported or sealed box firing forward. Any box designs for these dimensions would be greatly appreciated. My budget would be around $600.00 for the woofer and amp alone. Just in case this matters, I just installed 3 kef motorized speakers in the ceiling which have 8" drivers for front and center and I would like to build this sub soon to see my full potential. Thanks a million!

I forgot to mention that this would be used 100% of the time for movies only. Thanks

Re: In wall subwoofer build

What is on the other side of the wall where you want to build your sub? hopefully a storage room of some kind.

You want to do a google search for "Cult Of The Infinitely Baffled". The best subwoofer design I've ever heard, and the best for in-wall mounting, is "Infinite Baffle". My IB sub delivers the best bass I've ever heard. - Your budget should not be an issue.

Re: In wall subwoofer build

I had no idea of this concept. I would rather go into my attic with this setup. Where can I buy Fi Car Audio IB15's or 18's? Are there any other subs that are recommended for this type of application? I just ordered an Ep2500 amp off of Ebay and now I need to purchase the subs. I plan on doing a 4 sub array through my attic. Thanks for your help.

That's why you check with the forum before building a spot for your sub.

I'm going to go out on a limb and and say they are available from ficaraudio.com. Scott and his crew are great guys. In fact, I had him build me custom recone kits for my 18" drivers I'm building for my IB subs.

Elemental Designs has some 18's that are acceptable. Exodus Audio (diycable.com) has the Maelstrom-X as well as 15" IB subs. AE Speakers has a 15" IB sub and will soon have an 18" model. Incriminator Audio should be able to custom build an 18" or 22" sub. Pierce Audio Products can custom build 18's. If you are in Canada, then Mach 5 audio or Creative Sound Solutions are the places to go......There are no shortages of great drivers available.

My plan is to use two manifolds each with a pair of 18's. Manifolds are better than an array since opposing drivers cancel out mechanical vibration. I already have the EP-2500 which is powering my pair of 15's.
