Front Speaker plans

Alright, after months of trying to find all the speakers for a HT system at a LOW price, I've decided to build a little bit pricier over time. I'm planning on the fronts and center first and am looking to spend no more than about $550.

Here's what I'm looking at. All include 2 fronts and a center channel:

SVS: SBS - $410
SCS - $525

Cambridge Sound Works: MC155 - $360
MC305 - $480

HTD: Level II - $330
Level III - $500

HSU: MK2 - $540

The Speaker Company: LCRP3 - $450
LCRP2 - $420
LCRP1 - $360

Aperion: 4's - $420

I've read enough on these forums to know that timbre match is key with what I'm looking for. I'm planning on trying all of them out, starting with TSC, Aperion and HTD since they have free shipping both ways. I'm surprised TSC has three different levels of speakers so similar in price. We'll see what that means.

Anyway, all opinions are welcome. I'm leaning more toward the SVS's due to how much they are loved on this forum, but we'll see. Thanks for any suggestions.

The company (SVS) and its subs are loved because of the great value and customer service they provide. Speakers are a little different because everyone has their own tastes. You are doing the right thing by auditioning many brands.

Are you getting all of these speakers at once?

Kef appears to have some new styles coming out so a set of their older iQs can be had for great pricing right now as well.

It was an eye opener for me when I put the pink noise though my system and I had an entry level JBL center and fronts. I used the SPL meter to set the levels but hat did NOT tell the whole story. The difference in sound between the center and fronts was so drastic that I was perplexed......AKA dissapointed. Yes the center and fronts were from the same series but Wow I mean WOW what a difference in timbre now in my current system. I didn't really get it until that point and then I was so dissapointed in my system......before that I was So proud.

Now I have a system that is (at least my ears) truly timbre matched and balanced. (Paradigm Monitor 7's) Yes it is a difference and an eye(ear) opener when you get here.

I can vouch for SVS as a support organization. I can vouch for the Ultra PB13as an awesome sub and I can only assume they excel in their other products as well.

.....this is truly an illness

Personally I would buy the front mains and the speakers for the surround channels.

The surround channels are what contain the ambience and directional information for movies with a multichannel soundtrack, particularly action/adventure movies. So when combined with the output from the front channels, this information is what makes a huge difference compared to stereo (which is basically what a left/center/right configuration actually creates) and really helps to put you literally "into" the movie. I almost never use the word "huge" to describe sound-related issues, but this is one of those cases where it fits.

I'm very happy with my Infinity Beta 20's and c250 center (the larger c360 wouldn't fit my entertainment center). Much better than I expected. Very smooth, soft sound with good bass for their size and while the tweeter doesn't grab your attention like car alarm it does what a good tweeter should do. It isn't noticed unless it's needed. And they won't make a bad recording sound good. What goes in comes out. But a good recording sounds wonderful, for a speaker in this price range.

You can still find the 20's and a 250/360 new on eBay for under $500 shipped. Check return policies and warranty info since these are on closeout @ 1/2 off retail from third party dealers.

BTW, from the one's you mentioned it would be between the SVS and HSU. Aperion makes a real good speaker but the 4's are a bit too small for me. In the end, I bet the SVS would be my choice. Be fun to "hear" what you wind up getting.

Are you getting all of these speakers at once?

SVS is usually regarded very well in industry they have good support.

also try the DIY section on partsexpress.com. they also have Arum Cantus and Morel products if your looking to build a superior set of speakers. I have also learned a great deal about building crossover networks from there forum section
