Bewitched Season 8?

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Do you think when they release the box set of the entire series that it will include seasons 1 and 2 in B and W or color? I own the color, but I want the black and white so I am holding off buying them until the box set comes out just to be safe... Wonder if they will include the Tabitha series in the box set? I can't wait for season 8 and i hope its really July 14th

[quote=Michael Rogers]In the 1980's when Nick At Nite got the B&W Bewitched, one of their selling points was that "they haven't been seen in years!". And yup, the only Bewitched shows seen in general syndication for years and years were the color ones. Before that, I only remember seeing B&W Bewitched only for a brief time in the late 1970's (I don't remember the particulars of that but it was promoted as some sort of special event back then. Maybe it was decided to briefly syndicate the B&W shows for a time).

Per an old article I found on the internet Bewitched didn't start on Nick At Night until 1994.

Article from:
Broadcasting & Cable
Article date:
May 16, 1994
Nick at Nite is adding three series--Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and Taxi--to its lineup of classic sitcoms. I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched will debut on June 6 as part of the network's new "Magic Hour" slot,

I remember the promo for the B&W Bewitched episodes. It specially said the B&W shows had not been seen in 10 years. That would mean they had been in shown syndication and/or TBS until 1984. It is certainly possible that some local stations didn't bother showing the B&W shows prior to 1984 or just didn't want them.
The reason Nick At Night only showed the B&W episodes for several years was because the color ones were still being shown locally and on TBS. Once the TBS and local contracts expired Nick and later TV Land got all the episodes

The complete series from Japan only has the colorized season 1 and 2.
I Dream of Jeannie series set in USA only has a colorized Season 1. Based on this, I would assume a series set of Bewitched would have colorized seasons only. Japan never got the episodes in the original Black and White.

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Speaking of the B/W seasons, I'm glad that Sony released them as well as the colorized versions to give U.S. collectors a choice. I much prefer the original B/W versions so I wouldn't be buying the complete series set since I'll most likely have the remaining single/season sets. But I'll be happy for the BW fans that a complete series set is coming.

As for "...Jeannie", I'm the same way. I loved being able to buy that 1st B/W season non-colorized.

Interesting posts about the effects of watching this show on the modern FS HD TV's. All I can say that, for me, watching this show on my 50" Plasma set is amazing. I'm seeing details on the BW interior "house" scenes that I've never seen before and the color definitions in the color season sets just blows me away. I'm watching via a Std upconverted (HDMI) player output.

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Bewitched had two distinct runs on Nick at Nite, first the B&W years in the late '80s, which was a package by The Program Exchange. This package was also available to local stations, as I remember WNOL TV 38 New Orleans airing it. Then Nick took it off, leading to a campaign by fans to get Nick to put it back on. I remember seeing an episode of The Joan Rivers Show geared towards old classic shows and fans in the audience were dressed like witches with signs saying "Nick at Nite, bring back Bewitched!" Nick did bring it back, making it the only show that Nick has done this for. Then when the color episodes became available for cable rights, they bought them, but they were still a separate package from the B&W years. When Hallmark obtained the series, after Nick let the rights laspe, finally the series was packaged as one.

The B&W years certainly were syndicated during the '70s as I vividly remember the local CBS station rerunning it in the afternoon and always starting the package with episode #2, "Be it ever be so mortgaged" (I don't recall what the reason was that they always skipped over the pilot).

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Smart move by Sony.

Then, they can have the big complete series box set (with extras, of course) ready for Christmas.

It's nice to see Sony plugging along with completing some of their long running series (Bewitched, Married With Children).

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

That's exactly what they did last year with I Deam of Jeannie. The last season came out on July 8th and the complete series set came out on Nov 11th. Bet we're looking at a similar timetable.

I'll be passing on the complete set though, barring any remarkable additional content.

I'm doubtful Sony will do anything of substantial nature when they release the complete box set, other than what was done for the Japanese release. In any case, I won't be buying it.

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Yes!! I remember that run in '89; it was actually the first time I'd EVER seen the B&W episodes. My local station had been running it in syndication since about 1972 (KTTV in Los Angeles.) They NEVER showed the B&W episodes; but I knew about them, because they did re-run the pilot in primetime in 1974--to celebrate Bewitched's 10th anniversary. Very nice of them. However, I never saw that pilot again until the Columbia House tapes came out.

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

BTW, a little off topic but I watched some of a Jerry Lewis movie called Hook Line and Sinker yesterday on TCM. His house in the movie was the Gidget TV show house near the Bewitched house while the interior sets are most definitely the Bewitched interior sets but redressed in much brighter colors. The Bewitched kitchen set was also used and an office set that looked like a redress of either Darren's or Larry's

The Bewitched living room also made an appearance during Season 1 of The Monkees.

Can't remember the episode, though. Sorry.

The Bewitched living room doubled as Dr. Bellows in the beginning (later they got their own set). The Bewitched living room also showed up in Gidget as one of Gidget's friend's house.

I agree! It would just be terrible if Sony left us hanging at season seven. Glad that doesn't seem to be the case.

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Here are the pics that I think should be used for the cover art:

Elizabeth/Samantha:

(this is one of my most favorite of her)

Dick Sargent/Durwood:

Of course, colorized and placed on the right side of Samantha so he's looking at her.

Agnes Moorehead/Endora:

Again, colorized but placed on the left side. There aren't very many photos of AM from the 8th season and that's prolly cause she was getting so sick

Erin Murphy/Tabitha:

David Lawrence/Adam:

Even though Adam is not a favorite, he still needs a place on the last season.

And my choices for the back of the box are:

Of course, they may surprise by pulling out some pics that have never been seen before, but it seems that they mainly have the pics that the BW Collector has.

Less than 17 weeks to go!....Man, that sounds like a long time

David, great pics! Thanks,

That 1st one of EM is a stunner

I'm just happy that this entire series is getting its DVD release. There's a lot of other shows out there (esp Sony) that are stalled.

Does anyone know when the 1st BW set was released? I wonder how log it took to complete the DVD series for BW.

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Bewitched on DVD, Release Info, News at TVShowsOnDVD.com has a listing of every season's release date.

So with S.1 being released on 6/21/05 and S.8 most likely being released on 7/14/09 it will be four years and three weeks to get the whole series out, which is about 2 seasons per year. Not bad! And the spin-off "Tabitha" was also released in that time, something I would've thought would NEVER happen!

Re: Bewitched Season 8?

Thanks for the release dates, David. You're right, that's great for Sony (4 yrs). It showed Sony that BW has been a cash cow for them.

I still can't get over how these BW shows look on the Plasma set upconverted. Awesome.

I was also very surprised at "Tabitha's" release. I have that one in the collection. I thought it was a fun show but it didn't last long back then. I thought that Lisa Hartman was a great cast for the part and Bob Urich "pre-VEGA$" was good in the boss'es role.

Well, that's really funny! I saw that too on You Tube, just yesterday. It was posted by a Italian friend of mine, Nicolo. (BewitchedNick)

I was really surprised to see that product that doesn't have a Sony Tristar logo on it... The price is good! For only 6 € you get 2 DVD (6 episodes) and a magazine about the series.

I'll tell you more tonight as I am in a hurry now. Happy Easter everyone!

Everything you said is correct, David. Your French is good!
Altaya is a magazine store and they are bringing a new product: a magazine on Bewitched including DVDs! From what I read, that magazine focuses on every aspect of the show. There must be some nice pictures in it. I'd love to see that.

Volume 1 has an introduction price of 3 €, volumes 2 & 3 are priced at 6 € each... but they don't mention any price for the next volumes.

I don't care about the DVDs because I already have them, but I would be glad to get my hands on those magazines...

Where are those rumors coming from?? there are NO lost BW or unseen BW episodes. There was one script that was never produced as an actual episode during the Dick York era about the automotive industry. Beings that Chevrolet was a sponsor at that point, the script was scrapped in fear of offending the sponsor!

Jude, I am not sure where the rumours are coming from but different people have said that, but it is probably wishful thinking... I just hope that Season 8 comes out this July... any word on the cover art? I hope it has Liz with her long gorgeous hair!!

Jude I also heard that Liz shot 4 episodes for Season 9 so that is probably not true and it may be where these people are getting the idea that 4 never before seen episode are existing somewhere... but it would be nice
