I agree. Obviously, comedy is one of the most subjective things in the world and I can look at something like Paul Blart: Mall Cop (for example) and see how that might appeal to some people but Dane Cook is so painfully unfunny and untalented to me that I can't even begin to fathom how he's been so successful. That being said though, he can sell out huge venues (like Madison Square Garden) so it's clear that some people love him.

My local NBC affiliate is going digital at 2:05 AM, so I taping it off the analog rabbit ears and happened to catch a fantastic Andy Richter story from Norm McDonald on tonight's "Tonight Show". I'll post a clip tomorrow sometime.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

Letterman beat Conan again last night.

Conan Watch: Dave bests Conan again in preliminary household rating

The 2nd time this week. I guess the last time Dave beat Jay was in October.

Obviously, no need to panic and its just the start of ratings war between these two, there has to be some concern at NBC for it to be this close after 1 week.

About panic, who knows with network people but I sure hope they don't do anything drastic with Conan (I like him) and if they do make changes I hope its more in line of what Conan and his staff want rather then other people.

Need more Andy imo.

NBC said before he took over that they will measure Conan's success in terms of the first couple years and not the first weeks or even months, so I wouldn't be too worried. I'm sure the show will evolve, but in an organic sort of fashion.

As promised, Norm McDonald on his relationship with Andy Richter from last night's "Conan":

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I can't stand Norm McDonald. I simply don't find him funny at all. I even remember his stint on Saturday Night Live. His Weekend Updates were extremely painful to watch simply because THEY WEREN'T FUNNY!

Skipped over it. Next guest, please!

I've never liked Weekend Update, and Norm's tenure was no exception. However, Norm McDonald + Conan O'Brien = hilarity in my book.

That Shatner interview from last night is one of the funniest and most entertaining talk show interviews I've ever seen.

Re: The Tonight Show w/Conan O'Brien

I looks like Conan's ratings are doing fine.

For Conan, a Strong Second Week

I love this quote:
Quote:
Among younger viewers Mr. O’Brien continued to dwarf Mr. Letterman’s ratings, beating him soundly in the most important group for many advertisers, viewers 18 to 49, and crushing him with the youngest end of that group, viewers 18 to 34.

It is looking like Conan is doing a fine job.

One interesting data point is the average ages of the viewers of the two shows:
Letterman - 56.7
O'Brian - 45.7
Leno - 55.7

I guess this means that NBC should be happy. I think they were hoping to get a younger audience.

Seeing the show in person earlier this evening was awesome. You can't see me or my two friends in the audience shots however because we were near the far wall on the band's side of the stage.

The set is just as impressive in person as live.

The coolest moment, from an audience perspective, was during the Demi Lovato's song. Conan's family came in and his daughter (5-6 years old?) was obviously a fan. She stood with him just off camera during the performance. You can see this in one of the very long shots during the performance on he bottom left of the frame, though maybe by air time they had cropped them out.

Anyway, good times all around.
