No Sound with HDMI and DVD-R, why?

I have a Panasonic DVD player with upscale linked to a 1080p set through the HDMI cable. Regular DVDs play fine as well as "exact copy" ones but home made DVDs using broadcast sources don't play correctly. Their menus have sound but all you get is video and no audio with the film itself. I had this same player hooked to an older set via RCA jacks and the same discs played fine so have to think it is the HDMI and (non-exact copy) DVD-R combo here? What is happening and how to correct this problem?

Re: No Sound with HDMI and DVD-R, why?

What model TV set, which model DVD recorder? Maybe the TV doesn't like PCM tracks or certain sampling rates. There might be settings you can change, probably wouldn't help the discs you already have though.

Easiest solution is just use component video & analog stereo audio. Let the TV do the upconversion instead of the DVD.

Re: No Sound with HDMI and DVD-R, why?

It is a Vizio SV420XVT LCD HDTV 120Hz and the DVD player is a Panasonic S52S.

I am not recording myself... they were pre recorded for me by other people. The DVD is strictly a "player" and play the discs fine minus the HDMI on an old set. Just don't want to sacrafice quality by using older type cables or bog down the set in fast action which is now smooth.

I am sorta assuming the set is doing it anyway as after I make any video changes on the set while the DVD is playing, it says the input is 480.
