Re: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly Announced in Region B - now in Region A as well

I think it's important to remind people that if it wasn't for both a public and media artist groundswell of support against pan & scan home videos over 20 years ago, we would never have gotten to the point we have now. To continually strive, or at least hope, for increased attention and vigilance in properly preserving film as history and art for the public market should always be a work-in-progress and never just rest on its laurels. Such careful scrutiny should always be welcome, even if it at times it does appear to be bordering or crossing over into the extreme. I would rather run that risk than blindly trust the manufacturers to do the right thing on their own or provide the careful and calculated oversight often necessary in serving this media the way it should be. Time and again it has been consistently proven that the studios need the input of their potential customers to establish and further refine their product. To just say we've come a long way and now it's time to stop or to recede from the debate and label anyone else who doesn't as a "fanatic," is a very short sighted perspective.

Having said all that, I do agree that one should always reach a level of personal satisfaction within themselves and their passions, lest they NEVER find any contentment whatsoever and instead choose to always focus on their disappointment, whether justified or not. But at the same time it's important to remember that not everyone finds that level simultaneously or from the same catalyst.

"Where we are now" is pretty much where we've always been. The vast majority of consumers want their TV screens to be filled as much as possible. For the ever-increasing portion of the consumer base that have wide-screen TVs, wide-screen presentations fill the bill. For 4:3 material, they view it either stretched or cropped. They don't give a bee's behind for the opinions of media artists.

I disagree, but I would respectfully point you to the last line of my original post and wish you well in your continued pursuits of perfection.

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly recently got released in Italy on BD. The Italian release is not from MGM but from Mondo and is a new transfer from a recent restoration. Some screenshots (courtesy of a poster on a German forum) really show what a piece of DNR'ed crap MGM gave us:

Mondo: http://img5.imagebanana.com/img/rka9wok/mondo014151.jpg

Unfortunately the Italian BD does not have the English dub but only  the Italian one.

Hi Danny, thanks for the caps, as you know the MGM Blu-Ray has been said to look like a freshly struck print here and elsewhere and while I always knew this to be completely false (I have seen a print here and there to know how 35mm prints can look) it is nice to now have evidence of how bad the MGM Blu-Ray really is.

To be frank even I did not expect such an enormous difference - this is a complete annihilation of the MGM version !

Wow, based on those caps, the Italian BD looks great and MGM's BD looks like a DVD. Shame the Italian BD doesn't have the English dub.  Actually, shame on MGM for the terrible video quality on their The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly BD.

I sincerely hope that Glenn Erickson views the Italian version and adjusts his review of the MGM release.

There are a whole load more jaw-dropping caps posted at the AVS Forums here. The other point to make is that this version is without the extended scenes which appear on the MGM disc, and have, ah, divided opinion somewhat.

Is there any news on all of the Leone / Eastwood films and Fistful Of Dynamite coming to blu ray in the US region 1?

I'm still waiting..

MGM's release schedule is really puzzling. Why weren't these films issued as a box set????

Don't even start about the unreleased 9 Bond films...

Rocky is coming in November, but that's about it for MGM.

I guess they have plenty of financial issues to deal with..

MGM don't have anything to do with releases of their back catalogue. They're only making new movies, for some time now. Its Warner who looks after their early catalogue and maybe someone else who looks after their later stuff. The Raging Bull BD was put out by Fox, for example.

P.S Tarantino has finally bested Pulp Fiction.

That's not quite true Ben. In simplified terms, MGM still own (and are responsible for the transfers of) their catalogue (mainly 1986 onwards MGM titles and UA films) titles - the deal with Fox means that they handle timing and pricing of said releases only. Warners own the rights to the pre-1986 MGM catalogue lock, stock and barrel.

Thanks for clearing that up John.
