Speaker consideration

I've been working on the basement in my house so I can place a home theater down there. The basemet is divided in 2 with a wall in the middle that seperates each section. The section of the basement that the home theater will go into is a 20x20 room. There is also a small 4x8 pool table in this section, the remainder will be for the theater.

The 2 year old Panasonic 58" plasma TV that I already have will go into the corner, the front speakers can be floor standing speaker, but the rear speakers will have to go into the ceiling. I've been thinking about going with Definitive Technology for all the speakers. Starting with BP7006 for the front L&R, a C/L/R2002 for the center channel, & going with 4 UIW BP/A speaker for the rears.

I was interested in reading what the other members thought about the speaker choices. Also if anyone thinks that some other speakers would work(sound) better I would like to hear about them.

Thanks.

Re: Speaker consideration

Hi Brian,

I have a few comments on your setup. First, if you are going to use in ceiling surrounds, you should make sure you have the optimal location (since they will be 'permanently placed'). The TV in the corner is not the best place for a HT. I understand if it is not possible to move, but you should know it is a compromise.

Second, the 'rear' surrounds in a 5.1 system should really be placed on the side of the listening position. They should be a few feet above ear level and maybe a little behind. Again, if not possible, you can compromise and put them behind you.

Re: Speaker consideration

I have my TV in the corner and 6.1 system due to poor seating and side surround placements. If at all possible I would avoid the corner load of the TV LCR speakers. I have heard a number of HT systems and I prefer the more balanced and wider soundstage possible with a flat main set up.
Having said that I had no other place to put the TV(WAF) and having the side surrounds mounted as wide as possible and adding the center rear channel does give me a very good surround experience.

I am not a big fan of in-wall/cieling speakers, I have always felt they lacked a certain amount of impact, sound clarity etc. If possible consider ceiling mounting a set of bookshelf/di/bi/multifiring surround speakers.

Re: Speaker consideration

With the pool table it limits how things can be arranged. If you divide the 20x20 room from corner to corner, the pool table will take up the back 1/2 of the room. Then the seating & H/T will take up the other 1/2. While I believe that a square, or rectangular room would be best for H/T, this is what I have to work with. As I mentioned with people walking around the table with pool ques, floor standing surrounds will accidently get knocked around. So I'm kind of limited to placing them in the ceiling.

Unfortunately locally there aren't any more stores where I can go to & check out H/T equipment. So as far as the speakers, I've been thinking about the speaker manufacturers that I thought had very good speakers when I upgraded my stereo system several years ago. Some of the speaker manufacturers aren't around any more, & as much as I would like, I don't see using Magna Pans (the speakers I chose for the stereo system) as an option.

So this is why the Definitive Technology speakers are on my list as speaker options. I was just hoping to possibly find out if these speakers will work well together in H/T. I believe that using the same type of speaker for each position would be the best balanced system. But with how the basement is, compromises will just have to be made.

Thanks for the feedback.
