Slam dunk -- Panasonic
Better set even if both were new. Just follow the general advice about gaming on plasma -- it's much better than in the past, but I still don't think it can be ignored.
Truth in lending -- I have a strong Philips (anti-)bias to begin with and wouldn't own anything from them above $100. Even if you're set on a non-plasma I think there are far better options than a refurb from Philips.

Unless you have lighting issues, the Panny plasma is the runaway winner. The top end LCDs have improved considerably, but plasma still has the overall better picture quality and the off-axis viewing angles are miles better than LCD. Also, plasma will usually be a little less expensive than an LCD of the same size and class.
The only area where LCD beats plasma is brightness. So if you have a bright room, especially if there is a lot of reflected light, LCD might be a better option.

I own the 47pfl7503D/F7. I got it from sam's club brand new for 1,194. I love it. I can play movies, dvds, and games on it.
