MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Perhaps it's the 1973 ABC documentary Peyton Place Revisited, which was a retrospective of the series hosted by Peter Lawford. Mia Farrow actually sat down for an interview as part of the special, which had a lot of clips. I was lucky to see it as a kid (it was my first exposure to PP, having been born during the show's original run!), and would not be surprised if the special (a Fox production) is still in the Fox vault.

There is a precedent: for its release of Valley of the Dolls, Fox went into its vaults and pulled two TV specials from '67 about the film and Jackie Susann. So I wouldn't be surprised if both the pilot and the documentary were included for the new release. Also, since she provided both commentary and interviews for Valley, I wouldn't be surprised if Barbara Parkins (who as Betty Anderson defined 'sultry') did the same for PP!

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

I never saw that special you mention Charles. What was it about, the series, or the whole franchise, book, film, series ?? Was Dorothy Malone on it ?? That is interesting they did this considering "Return" was running on NBC as a daytime soap......
How was the daytime version as good as the night time. On that Allison was back in the daily run. How did they explain her return ??
Thanks.......

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Charles I know you want "Inside Peyton Place" I did some checking and you can have the book at a very nice price of nine bucks. I know we are not suppose to name retailers it is at a very popular on line book dealer A....... I hope this helps they have many copies.

The news is great and I hope too that Peyton Place Revisted will be there as new comentary from Barbara Parkins. What I liked all stars were there except I think Dorothy Malone and I believe a few others. It was once said I am sure you know Charles as great historian for the show. More actors went thru Peyton Place as the size of a small town.

Fans of the Invaders will find of course Kent Smith as a second season regular. There was also Mary Martin Peytons Housekeeper in the episode entiitled "obsession" and Martin Peytons Lawyer young Billy who gives Leslie the boot. He is in "Captive". and also of course Time Tunnels own Ray and the General were both in the Invaders right after Tunnels demise. Ray a doctor at Georges Sanitairum and the General of course Calvin Hanley.

Back to the Peyton Place Revisited: I check my scrapbook on the show however not put together and found the AbC affiliate program annoucement for Friday Septmeber 26 1973 or 75 it can be check over at the IMdb for date. It has quotes the show aired on Wide World Special from1030:pm to 12:00Pm. Clips from the movie were shown John kerr Barbara Parkins Mia Farrow Chris Connelly. The haircuting Valley of the Dolls Peyton Place spinoff for Barbara. Pat Morrow was there and also Paul Monash as I do a quick scan.

The daytime soap I have some things on I only know the loose ends of the show were tied up in the first episodes. I see here in the orginal show if Mia stay she and Rod were suppose to marry according to writers. By the way one of my all time favortie episodes is Rod and Allisons sail boat ride and then coming home to greet Connie who knew what happend great great acting on all front and on a subject gracefully handled by one and all. That episode should have one an Emmy.

The first episode of Peyton Place I watched was when Rod gave Betty a kiss as she leaves the Peyton House for good ending there first marriage. I was hooked then at 11 years of age.

So on a personal note thankyou Charles for restoring my favorite show of all time to me on DVD. You kept the fires burning for this show and I will always be grateful.

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Oh wow.... you made my day. That 'sailing' episode is a favorite of mine too, and it took place right after two characters tied the knot in a big ceremony with Rodney and Allison among the guests- pehaps it inspired them for what happened later. Farrow and O'Neal had such great chemistry together, and to this day I hope they will reteam in some project together.

Here's a thought: since Fox produced the daytime soap as well, the odds are they saved the tapes for possible foreign syndication. So, hopefully after the entire primetime show is out on DVD, Shout! Factory can continue with the daytime spinoff.

Thanks for the 'heads up' on the book, Mark!

Some more info on Rose Hobart who played Mary: she had been a longtime player in Hollywood as a supporting player and a second-string leading lady. However, she got caught in the blacklist and didn't work for years. PP was something of a comeback for her. She was also the inspiration for one of the first avant-garde art films, named (what else?) Rose Hobart!

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

How about Betty and Steve on the drawing room rug of the Peyton Mansion with lovely Adrienne looking on. Another one of my particular favorites. That show went south the minute Betty and Rod said I do the second time. Barbara and James I thought worked great together.

So Jack you too own both vhs and dvds of Dark Shadows and like me must have all best of and the edited vhs. People would ask me where my new car was and I would open the door and say look in there. I loved to see the shock on their faces.

You are a High School Drama Teacher or Educator I think I read in a post. My high school drama teacher constantly dressed up cape hair the cane the works as Barnabas on a regular basis. I do not lie strike me dead now. The cool part was he even looked like Jonathan Frid. Needless to say he was fan Haaaaaaaaa

To show how mixed up I am I have an autograped picture Jonathan sent me in 1967 or early 68 and I have it framed on my night stand just as I had when I was a kid.

Glad to help out Charles. Anytime I can help out just ask.

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

I just checked IMDB and it said the first pilot for the series was filmed in '62. That was a few years before, the series started in 64. I wonder if that was with Malone, Nelson, Farrow, Parkins, etc ?? Or an entirely different cast ??
Someone had written that in the comments..................
How was the daytime series ?? As good as the original ?? Did they do outdoor scenes as well. It seems like I remember they ran one episode in the evening ??
If memory serves me correctly..........I never saw the second series.....

Yes Mark, I am a high school drama teacher who has shared Dark Shadows with my students to very enthusiastic responses.

Peyton Place and Dark Shadows are the only television watching I do these days. We are working on our school play, and I come home pretty exhausted. My dose of each show is just the escapism I need before going to bed to start another day again.

Thanks Charles for the episode number for the sailing trip with Rod and Allison! I have not gotten there yet, but it won't be long!

Here's some really big news: Ed Nelson (PP's Dr. Rossi) has written a memoir, Beyond Peyton Place, and you can order it thru several places:

Amazon.com: Beyond Peyton Place: my fifty years on stage, screen, and television: Ed Nelson, Alvin M. Cotlar, M.D.: Books

Beyond Peyton Place: My Fifty Years on Stage, Screen and Television - Self Publishing with Word Association

I just ordered a copy, and can't wait to read it!

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Evidently, my best friend and I are not the only people on earth who love and miss this show.
I came upon it first when it was rerun in some Fox markets around 1992-1994.

If you do not yet know this show from having seen it, or from our entusiasm in this thread, it is one of the most entertaining and addictive shows ever.

However Shout puts this together (best ofs? bits and pieces...) I'll take it....hoping for a digital glance at Nurse Esther Choate, Stella Chernak,
and a couple of drinks at Ada Jacks' tavern. HOORAYYYYY!!!!!

And...I was too excited to post to read through the last three pages......has someone already mentioned the pilot footage that exists in the ABC '64 FALL PREVIEW show that (I believe) is floating around in public domain?
The clips there have pilot scenes of Dorothy Malone being introduced to Ed Nelson in the square and calling him "Mr" Rossi, rather than doctor.
Not sure if those brief moments will ever see a legit release.

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Charles that book sounds very interesting for and die hard fan of the show such as I. Jack you stated my feelings exactly about both Peyton Place and Dark Shadows. I just need to let the busy life we all lead to slow to a gentle pace and those particular shows do it for me. I even let my phone ring and refuse to answer while viewing the show.

I have some more to comment on this but not until I collect my thoughts. Y

The daytime soap I belive was filmed with the same town square I thought the Peyton Mansion was the same. Ely Ada and Rita were there. I saw maybe five or ten minutes of the show. I either have read or heard plot lines for the show and even how it ended. I will not spoil that for anyone. Iam not sure about an evening episode. It could be possible trying to get the public interested. The only daytime soap I know of that aired an evening episode was The Edge Of Night which aired a 90 minute episode on AbC late night in the early 70s. This had happened when ABC had pickup the show after CBS had dumped it.

Yes I also hope after the 514 shows and post show movies are out that Shout could release the daytime soap. Then all Peyton Place would be on Dvd.

Selena Cross was in it and they did a nation wide search for the new Allison. Martin Peyton was also in the series.

Shout!'s process, like that of almost every other studio, is to first inform retailers, and then weeks later to inform press, and then around that time to post the info on their consumer site.

I'm getting my initial TSoD info from the retailer contacts I've developed over the years. So I get my info waaay earlier than other press.

For example, I posted Rhoda info on 12/18, and a Rhoda press release on 2/18:
TVShowsOnDVD.com - News for Rhoda

It was a similar 2-month gap between "retail announce" and "press release" for other 2009 releases from Shout!, such as Simon & Simon, Calf. Dreams, Paper Chase, Mr. Belvedere and Room 222.

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Does anyone have any good info or a link to info on the daytime version? I'm not sure what I'm hearing--was it really a continuation of the primetime serial? Or was it a reboot? In other words, is it worth rooting for Shout to release it after the primetime sets are complete? (I know--there's a LOT of sets to get thru at any rate. But after Dark Shadows--it's do-able).

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Well, the daytime version was more-or- less a sequel, with a good deal of the major continuing characters from the nighttime show, but mostly recast with other actors. And there were continuity errors- most notably a pivotal character from the original show who had died offscreen was brought back to life without a single explanation. One of the writer/producers of the daytime version was James Lipton- yes, that James Lipton!

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Peyton Place and Dark Shadows are very much the same in quite a few areas.

Voice overs on each episode
No repeat episodes
Widows Hill / Sailors Bluff
Collinsport / Peyton Place
Blue Whale / Adas Place
18 years a magic number
Collinwood Mansion / Peyton Mansion
Collins Cannery / Peyton Mills
Absent Fathers for 18 years
Beach Houses
One significant Love triangle
Portraits and Painters
Collinsport Inn /Colonial Inn

The list could go on with camera work and writing and music and actors all top drawer. The two shows also had that timeless quality about them which makes them still work so well today

I never had a chance to watch an episode of the daytime soap Passions but I do remember TV Guide describing it as Peyton Place meets Dark Shadows.

I was so happy to see Peyton Place get a mention. I then realized that the author of the article saw these two shows as being very much the same.

Dark Shadows with supernatural plots spinning around one central character.

Peyton Place a miniseries of plots spinning around one central character.

Peyton Place and Dark Shadows both had that certain something the nightime soaps that followed lacked in some way.

How egocentric I am to state all this and I apoligize to anyone who reads this.

So I think Jack is on to something about watching the two shows back to back. Now if we could get all those Shadows fans to buy Peyton Place like Dark Shadows we would have it made.

Interesting - cold ABC have told Dan Curtis to create a quality daytime soap similar to "Peyton Place" but with a twist? Both "Peyton Place" and "Dark Shadows"

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Perhaps. Dan Curtis had the sold the concept of Dark Shadows to ABC, and had TV writer Art Wallace create the story of the Collins family and their freinds and enemies. As I said before, two of the DS writers worked on Peyton Place: Sam Hall worked briefly as a story consultant early in the show's run prior to writing for Dark Shadows, and after his time on DS, Malcolm Marmorstein wrote during the final season of Peyton Place.

Another big similarity: both shows were originally built around an ingenue character (Allison/Victoria), and when both actresses left their shows halfway through the series' runs due to real-life events (Mia Farrow left to marry Frank Sinatra, Alexandra Moltke left due to pregnancy), both characters left the story in mysterious circumstances, shortly after each ingenue found the body of a murdered woman!

Interesting comparison
Dorothy Malone and Joan Bennett could have easily played either part.
The similarities could go on and on....
Barnabas and Martin Peyton
Julia and Hannah Cord
Carolyn and Betty Anderson
Rodney and Joel
Rita and Maggie.......
AMAZING !!!

Re: MY DREAM CAME TRUE- "Peyton Place" on DVD this May from Shout! Entertainment!!

Charles your great!! and all of the others That ingenue was right in my face. She also fell for the romantic lead and could not be replaced with another actress in both shows. DS of course tried but failed.

The Convict in town to clear his name and will not say more. Each show had a 5 year run and tried to reinvent at the end which all shows do.

The two shows had a movie actress to head the cast as Alan pointed out.

The ingenue and the murdered body that is good Charles. The line even gave me a pause. I love it.

It is also funny how each show did the reverse when they returned to the tube a second time. DS aired nights PP days.

I was also surprised to hear Malcolm say he was brought in to help Peyton Place. He was on the Laura Collins story which was my all time favorite story lines on Dark Shadows. I watched it when it first aired.

Each had a drunk on the show and I will leave it there. I would give plot away.

I was surprised how 3 favorite Peyton Place stars had roles on Leave it to Beaver. Perry Mason fans know that both Dark Shadows and Peyton Place had actors on that particular show.

I hope Dark Shadows fans who have not seen Peyton Place and read this thread will buy that first Peyton Place DVD.

Wow- After 47 years I'm a trendsetter? LOL!

Interesting to read the comparisons. Of course DS is supernatural, and PP is not, but the acting and storylines are so engaging, it keeps you coming back for more of both.

I'm a little ashamed to confess that I have not watched either this week. I'm the school drama teacher, and I have play practice every afternoon until 5. Then an hour commute home and dinner makes it 7 before I stop. I've been so tired I've been in bed early to get up and do it all again.

I'll catch up this wkend... I think Allison is coming out of the coma... And Nicholas Blair is trying to find Angelique- Big doings in Peyton Place and Collinsport! Must see TV!
