'Green Lantern' to shoot in Sydney

"Green Lantern"

SYDNEY -- Warner Bros. and DC Comics' next big-budget feature, "Green Lantern," will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees said Thursday.

Director Martin Campbell will be at the helm of the comic book's big-screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Donald Deline will produce with a reported budget of $150 million.

Rees said the film will create about 500 jobs and include a "substantial investment" in digital effects work in Australia.

"Green Lantern" should be eligible to receive the Australian federal government's 15% location rebate on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government to bring the project to Fox. New South Wales outbid interstate rivals Victoria and Queensland for the work.

"The decision by Warner Bros. to locate the production in New South Wales is tangible evidence that having a competitive incentive scheme in place returns positive results," Fox Studios Australia CEO Nancy Romano said.

The project is the latest film also to be attracted by the decline in the value of the Australian dollar.

"Green Lantern" is the third Warner Bros.-backed feature being made in New South Wales. "Happy Feet 2" is in development there, and "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" is in production by Animal Logic.

Preproduction on "Green Lantern" is set to begin in July, and filming is scheduled to start in November. Warners is aiming to release the film in December 2010.

Is Guggenheim no longer associated with this, then? If so, that's a relief. His writing is typically underwhelming.

Re: "Green Lantern" movie news...

I was looking forward to that after seeing Wonder Woman on Blu-Ray, and I still am. Bruce Timm has done some great work and almost single-handedly created the DCAU. I do wish Warner would give him a bigger budget, and increasing the length of the films. Basically creating a couple of theatrical productions, instead of direct to dvd films.
And of course I'm also looking forward to the live-action film. But of course there's not much information yet.

Re: "Green Lantern" movie news...

Sydney is the best place to shoot a Green Lantern movie, especially if the budget is going to be that high. Fox Studios Australia was one of the best investments Fox ever made. I visited Fox Studios Australia first-hand back in 1999 while they were building sets for Attack of the Clones. Fox Studios Australia has the largest sound stages anywhere. Glad to see DC working on other comic book characters; my thought is whether or not Green Lantern will be a dark piece. Marvel Entertainment doesn't impress me a whole lot, as their comic-book adaptations tend to be for a very young audience (17 years old and under). With films like The Dark Knight, I know that DC and WB take the comic book adaptation to whole different level.

Re: "Green Lantern" movie news...

From what WB has eluded to (and especially judging by the script), the tone of "Green Lantern" will more akin to "Iron Man" than it will TDK.

Re: "Green Lantern" movie news...

As it should be. Hal J.'s origin story should basically be a fighter pilot movie with a superhero. Top Ring.

Not a fighter pilot, but a test pilot, no? There's a difference. We don't need any more "warrior" takes on characters.

I don't have time enough to watch all these DVDs!

Well, in the New Frontier, Hal was a fighter pilot first, then a test pilot afterwards, so he could be both. Either way the story works.

Re: "Green Lantern" movie news...

In either case, my only point was that the movie works better if it has a similar tone to Iron Man or Top Gun rather than the Dark Knight. I was going to just say, "It should be Top Ring," but I wasn't sure if anyone would get what I was going for without any context. Not trying to insult any intelligences with that, but I sometimes know what I mean in my head but it doesn't come across.

You got that right. Dark and gritty works for the Batman character but I don't see that working for many other superhero movies.

A more dark and gritty plot would have worked great for Wolverine, but you are right about Green Lantern and other characters like Spiderman.

Check out this fan-made GL trailer with Nathan Fillion in the lead role (which I'd be onboard with Nathan as Hal):

How about Vincent Chase for Hal Jordan?
He was Aquaman, so maybe DC would be scared off...but the guy needs work..

That was great!

Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

I was hoping to see Reynolds as Flash, but this'll work.  Nice to see him get a high-profile gig, and this should be a good sci-fi action film.
Hey buddy...did you just see a real bright light?

Cool. I think Reynolds will do fine.

By the way, here's that script review I read a year ago that has me salivating. Spoilers, obviously:

I know they will eventually cast other actors for various GL Corp members, but I hope they leave out Guy, G'nort, and the chipmunk Lantern.

For some reason, I think Matt Damon with a bowl cut would be fab as Guy Gardner.
