Re: Wiseguy in HD
Here it is, it aired on HDnet, I'm sure it's still doing the rounds on other HD channels
Wiseguy on HDNET: How'd they do that? - DVD Talk Forum
Here's what the guy had to say (note that this post predates the Blu-Ray days by one year)

Wiseguy was one of my favorite TV series. I've caught a few episodes on HDNET. The PQ obviously blows away my DVD box sets. I just love film in HD.
The question is: How is the aspect ratio 16x9? This series running from 1987-90 was obviously 4x3. The few episodes I've seen on HDNET are not stretched in any way, and they don't seem to be cropped. I'm usually an OAR nut, but this looks nice. Is this an example of open-matte?
Thanks. |
For sure if the remasters are the way this guy describes them, I'll snap them on Blu-Ray instantly (hopefully with the original music score intact and untouched).

I backed it up (DVR) and really scrutinized it. Mainly I watched for objects that should be perfectly circular to become oblong. Never did I witness this, even at the edges of the screen. And the clarity and color correctness was so film-like. Sure, there was some grain and scratches, but I actually like this in some cases.
Some of the OAR purists may flame me (I consider myself to be an OAR-snob), but I actually wish the DVDs looked this way. I know the DVDs can't have the rez of the HD, but the widescreen presentation was phenomenal. |
If this is not a cropped presentation, and an actual remaster of the series using the original negatives and exposing more area left and right to fit the 1.77 screen, I'M BUYING RIGHT AWAY and I'm sure I will not be the only one, many people consider the first three seasons of Wiseguy starring Ken Wahl one of the best series of the 80's, a ground breaking show that started the whole "arc" "one story over multiple episodes" phenomenon that went through X-Files and now 24.
