Logan's Run BD this year?!

Everlasting gobstopper of a cover, that.  :p

The print looks okay though.  A bit grainy in some of those stills.  But I'll upgrade without hesitation.  And I'll do it again if they come out with something better.  For the film's subject matter and Mrs. Agutter, I'll keep upgrading.  :)

I love the dated look.  Just takes me back.  I wonder if we'll ever get a Blu Ray Westworld?  These complement each other in my mind.

I would like to see COMA and WESTWORLD on BD. It would be cool if they were able to release those with lossless audio 5.1 tracks. I believe the most recent FSM Score releases for COMA and WESTWORLD featured the score from stereo tapes , so I think they could do better than mono DVD sound.

Every CD or LP release of Coma and Westworld has been from stereo tapes - FSM is not unique to a stereo release of these two titles.

Sorry I didn't mean to imply their releases were the only ones in stereo, just that FSM released them more recently. As for COMA the sound out does my old LP and the older CD release by a long shot.

Coma is a great choice.  I'm not totally disappointed by the DVD release.  Although I haven't watched it since getting a 24" LCD for my PC.

As a side note LR was shown on the channel "InHD" a few years ago (albeit cropped), and it looked really good.  Says a lot as Cox was bitstarving their HD channels (~ 12mbps).  I had a recording of it, but dumped my D-VHS collection a couple years ago.

I'm still waiting for a decent version of Outland. The LD port to DVD just added more problems to an already subpar transfer.

Oh I more than agree about OUTLAND receiving a better release. Can't believe I passed up purchasing an extensive making-of which also included the screenplay book for OUTLAND.
I'll agree about WESTWORLD but have no opinion about COMA since I haven't gotten around to watching it yet. If Warner Brothers were to release WESTWORLD, would that also give the chance for FUTUREWORLD, of which I've only seen snippets, out domestically? One of my friends had an extra copy of the Making-of WESTWORLD DVD and gave me a double THINpak with custom cover for the OAR/Pan & Scan disc to be included with it. Of course since he was such an advocate as much as I was about OAR you know what next.
For LOGAN'S RUN , I'll check around to see if anyone would be willing to port the LD extras which aren't on the DVD nor this upcoming Blu-ray onto a DVD. That way we could order some 2-Disc BD cases from GenesysDTP and make our own custom Edition. I've actually done with several various titles in my collection. Non-specifially Blu-ray but it just keeps everything better organised.
Quite sure the Forum is alright with preserving LD content which isn't on DVD, HDDVD or Blu-ray. Of course importing can be a hassle but it certainly has its pay-offs.
ONE MORE THING! Still that cover looks highly anachronistic for the film and as I said in the official release thread, appears as Warner Brothers went to the future, culled some of their own marketing designs for the remake, came back and used it as the cover!

Another voice of support for a COMA release on Bd. I was just thinking about that movie a week ago. Great film. Unlike Outland, the current DVD  is serviceable, but it's a quality piece of work with a great cast. I would love to have it in an even higher quality edition.
I'd also buy  the Westworld/Futureworld films.

The impression I got from the comment in the last Warner HTF chat was that Outland would likely get repackaged and released in one of those 4 Film Favorite offerings or maybe a in double feature. Though nothing was implicit, it sounded like the film would get a new transfer but not necessarily a new or SE release. But then again, Arthur has had something ready now for the last three years and yet it still hasn't even been announced. Maybe these and Under The Rainbow are being saved for the 30th anniversary in 2 years

re: cover art for Logan's Run- I prefer the original key art be used, but I think if they had to come up with a new design to satisfy some overpaid suit, they could have done a lot worse. I had the same feeling that Ray had- this almost looks like a design that they could have went with 33 years ago. And I'd bet if it has a Criterion logo on it, more people would be inclined to compliment it.
I had thought this was worked up especially for the DVD but it appears they reissued the disc in a keep case edition 2 years back which is where this art was first used, I saw the disc for $3 in Big Lots.
Interesting if I want good past release catalog titles now, I have to skip Best Buy because they hardly ever stock those anymore. But the selection at Big Lots is quite good...sad.

Yeah it is quite amusing certain titles get a "silent" re-release, sometimes with new coverart, of already pre-existing titles/discs.
Speaking of Big Lots which is still on but a little off topic, turns out there's a Big Lots sorta near my Moms house in San Jose. Here's hoping I pick up at least Gunga Din for $3 among other titles I'm hunting for. Which section do they have their DVD's in? I could always ask when I finally go up there in three weeks.
The current SDVD, the Warner snapper DVD-10 with OAR on one side and P&S on the other, does of course look like a Laserdisc port. Oh well, it was also released very early on DVD so that also has to do with it. I am going to purchase this but I'll be holding off for a bit before I do. Just not high on the priority for upcoming release purchases at the moment. For an example, if I saw both Westworld and Logan's Run, both Blu-ray, on Amazon, chances are I'd purchase Westworld first. Obviously I'm biased to the great Yul Brynner too.
This is an eventual purchase for me. I still quite enjoyed the film. I'd give it a "Want" to almost "Really Want" status.
Perhaps this will inspire Universal to release Silent Running? Only parts from that film which I considered dated the film were the folk songs.

Both Westworld and Futureworld gave me nightmares in my younger days.  That gunfighter is not mentioned enough beside the likes of Michael, Jason and Freddy. It's a shame they didn't see the potential and do more movies focus squarely on that character.

Ditto on Outland.  I'm tired of my bought VHS.

Maybe I should see if I can still find the old snapper DVD (w/ original poster art) of Logan somewhere for $3, buy it, then cut off the cover to use wth my Blu. I almost bought a copy of this version a few years ago as a 'backup' for my old MGM DVD. Wish I had now!

I think that's a great idea Ray, if someone with the LD is willing to do it. I would pay a few bucks to whoever would do this to offset their costs for the DVD, their time, and postage.

I'm pretty sure they did - except they changed the name to the Terminator. "Westworld" was the first thing that popped into my mind the first time I saw Arnold in that role.

Stylistically, maybe, but the storylines came from different sources.  Westworld and Futureworld were based on scripts from Michael Crichton (who also directed), whereas the story from The Terminator was very loosely based off stories from Harlan Ellison.  On the other hand, the Terminator POV shots were certainly influenced by the Gunslinger POV shots.

Terminator!  Great comparison.  I've had people point out that Jurassic Park is basically Westworld.  Haha!  I guess T-Rex = gunfighter in that case.

Gary has his review up over at the Beaver, and it's not good. Despite his obvious dislike for the film the video review has me a bit concerned. I was hoping for a better image from a Todd-AO film, and some of the screenshots look a bit soft. I knew this title wouldn't get the royal treatment but I was hoping for better. After the Contact debacle I will wait until I see it myself before passing judgement. Only a couple more weeks. It has to be better than the DVD.

I wonder what he was expecting!?
It is what it is, and while i LOTHE screenshots, the pictures he posted look better than the DVD. My DVD is older than 2004 (the year he said the DVD came out), cause it was one of the first i bought, and it was a pre snapper MGM release, not the Warner. I am sure Warner used the same MGM DVD, but i could be wrong.

In any even, the DVD is 10 years old, at least, and will indeed be better on Blu.

Now, how about Lifeforce on Blu?

Yes, I agree Rick, most of the screenshots do look better than the DVD, but a couple are soft. The close-up of Michael York in Sandman HQ for example. I have the original MGM DVD too, and yes, the later Warners versions feature the same transfer.

I wouldn't mind having Lifeforce on Blu either, Mathilda May in HD has to be a good thing!

When will you people learn that you cannot trust his screenshots - most of the time they do not come close to representing what's on the Blu-Ray either in sharpness, detail, or color.  And yes, after Contact you'd think that would have been obvious to everyone.

Hello, didnt i just say i loath screen shots. And i dont use them to judge what we get.
However, dont you also think it would be obvious, that the Blu-ray will be better than a 10 year old DVD?

Of course it will be better - that was my point.  I misread your comment, BTW.  I thought it said you loathed the screenshots when what you wrote was that you loathe screenshots.  But my post was really directed at Heinz.

I could have left out the part about his pictures looking better than the DVD. The DVD really looks like crap on my 52" Sony LCD. I thought his review had some errors in it, such as the year the DVD came out. Its not that new!

Just a thought about his review.

How can you REALLY watch a movie on a technical level, if your not even engaged in it on a personal level. He could have been looking at a magazine, or watching his clock for all we know. Not saying he was, but just wondering. I am sure i wouldnt make a good reviewer, cause i think you have to spend time with a disc, maybe watch it more than once, if time allows. Maybe you need to be able to separate your personal views, with the disc in hand. Hard to do, I'm sure.

Billy, in post #107 I said:

"After the Contact debacle I will wait until I see it myself before passing judgement."

I DO NOT take screenshots as gospel for how the actual Blu-ray will look, especially from Gary's site. The shot I mentioned does look soft, while the others looked pretty good. I think Rick makes an interesting point about Gary's reviews. He's usually the first one to put them up and I sometimes wonder if he doesn't just skim through them quickly when it's a film he doesn't like, as in this case, just to be the first to review it. Just a thought, and maybe I'm way off base on that, but it makes me wonder. I still love Gary's site and visit it frequently, I've just learned to apply a sprinkling of salt to what I see and read there.

There aren't that many titles I'm willing to upgrade to Blu, but Logan's Run is one of them. I watched the anamorphic rerelease not that long ago, and while it was the best version I'd seen, there was certainly room for improvement, and hopefully this BR lives up to it. The screenshots don't look that soft.

I don't really care if a reviewer doesn't like the film or thinks it's silly, that is their taste and opinion - I happen to like '70s sci-fi, hokey effects and all.
