The Disclaimer
Standard disclaimer: All prices are taken from the websites of each chain, or from their printed Sunday advertisements. All prices are subject to change by each chain. Prices and inventory in-store may or may not match the website price.

I, obviously, cannot include EVERY title released in a given week in the RoundUp. The titles included are those that I am interested in...as well as those which I consider will be of interest to a majority of consumers (and sometimes I’ll miss one!). I don't get paid for this, and I don't have the time to list every DVD. So, please don't complain! If there is a title not included in the RoundUp that you want to see, PLEASE just look it up yourself, and be nice enough to post and share the results with everyone!

Note that I cannot include Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club prices in the RoundUp. They set prices at individual stores based on nearby competition, so there is no way I can say here what price you'll find at YOUR local Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club location. And, as always, Circuit City does not guarantee their sale prices in Hawaii.

The Specials

**Be Careful! The Express AND Saw V are BOTH being released this week in OAR & MAR versions! Get the right one. Also, National Lampoon’s Stoned Age is being released, this week, in RATED and UNRATED versions! Get the one that’s right for you!

--I don’t know what’s up with Saw V @ amazon.com…but they don’t have the CE version listed. Nor do they have the WS version listed…and the FS version is priced out-of-whack.

--Target, this week, is advertising a number of TV Shows on DVD at a price of $18.99. Titles shown are: Family Guy: Volumes 1 thru 6, Nip/Yuck: Seasons 1 thru 4, One Tree Hill: Seasons 1 thru 5.

So are you looking for suggestions for replacing CC on the Roundup or are the remaining four already enough work?

Thanks for the roundup. Maybe when the recession ends a new electronics chain will rise from the ashes. Mike, you can take your Circuit City Hawaiian disclaimer away too. Aloha.

Just the Express for me (from Target). This was imo a very underrated movie.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 1-20-2009

Definitely picking up King Kong on Blu-Ray......already have the production diaries and the previous DVD releases so I don't really need any more extras for this one. I might buy Max Payne and Saw V too if the price is right.

I will also get The Rockford Files: Season 6.....if not this week, sometime soon. Thanks....
Recently watched- BSG: Season 4.0[BD], Starship Troopers 3: Marauder[BD], The Happening[BD], Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen (IMAX)[BD], An American Werewolf In London[BD]

Currently watching- Heroes: Season 1[BD], Michael Palin: Pole To Pole, Battlestar Galactica[BD], Magnum P.I.: Season 7

Some of my most memorable "Black Friday" purchases came from my local Circuit City, including a 51-Inch HDTV for $600.00 in 2005, along with Dozens of DVD Box Sets. Thanks for the Memories!

After the supersale HTF code fiasco, I'd vote on DD.

Perhaps FYE? Though I don't know how easy it would be to determine their true prices with their rebate system. But it would be another B&M.

Of course, the final decision is up to Mr. Frezon.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 1-20-2009

I'm not going to miss CC at all. Anytime I went in there it was impossible to find sales help, and if you did, they knew next to nothing. New releases were a pain to find as they never had enough and would often sell out. The way the Internet has changed pricing on everything, CC did not adapt like Best Buy did.

Thanks for the Round-Up, Mike. I'd vote for Deep Discount as a replacement for CC too if it's not too much trouble.

Curious about Saw V and Amazon...

I preordered the unrated CE and received notice that it has shipped. However, the item is now listed as "discontinued by manufacturer" on their website. So, maybe they are sold out of their allocation and no longer offering it for sale.

I might let the CC/Hawaii disclaimer stand pat for awhile, Bill. I actually had the text highlighted and my finger heading to the delete button when I stopped myself because, for some reason, it always makes me laugh.

I'm glad to hear your impression on The Express. I'm a 'Cuse alum and am looking forward to seeing this film. It was in and out of theaters before I got a chance to see it.

Gosh. And the body's still warm!

I tried DeepDiscount for a few weeks in the RoundUp (probably a few years ago now) and the problem I kept having was that they would change their pricing all the time. I would post up the RoundUp and it seemed like I would be flooded with posts that DD's price on such-and-such was NOW $xx.xx. Too fluid. But maybe that's changed.

I tried Sears a while back and the apathy was compelling.

We used to try and include Sam's Club on a weekly basis...but we ran into regional inconsistencies there...just like with Wal-Mart. K-Mart never panned out, either.

It really DOES seem like this niche is turning into a two-horse race with companies like Target, Fry's, Wal-Mart trying to keep up.

We'll see what happens.

On a side note, everyone should be aware that amazon has again price-matched Best Buy on its good prices this week on catalog and recent Blu-ray discs (the $16.99 and $22.99 titles listed in the OP). This type of competition is good...very good, in fact.

Michael: Can I ask at what price did you pre-order the Saw V CE from amazon? You may be right, but I would find it hard to believe that the studios wouldn't be supplying the biggest on-line retailer enough stock of a new title. Wouldn't make sense. Maybe it's just a temporary glitch/stock problem.

Re: Weekly RoundUp 1-20-2009

Mike, instead of including DD's prices in the grid every week, why not simply provide a link to DVD Price Search for each title (or just the site in general) so all someone has to do is click on it to see what the e-tailers are listing stuff for. Or would that be a conflict of interest or something?

Anyway, I'll prolly grab Saw V at some point...not right now. Maybe The Notebook or Election in the future, too. The biggie for me this week is Save Me, featuring Judith Light, Robert Gant and my boy Chad Allen. Here's to hoping it's in store come Tuesday...

Me too, but, as Mike said, online prices change by the minute and what's right when he puts it together may not be right on Sunday morning. One click and having two windows open may be a compromise we have to make.

King Kong for me, preordered from Amazon.

I'd suggest WalMart for the grid. I have a gift card from them but their website is so anti-readable that I've never found a sale to take advantage of.

Unfortunately, Wal-Mart's in-store pricing varies from store to store, based on local competition. If store "A" is next to a Best Buy that is selling "New Release" for $15.99 and store "B" is five miles down the road, but with no direct competition, store "A" will probably price the "New Release" at $14.96 or $15.96 (to be cheaper than Best Buy) and "B" may price it at $17.96. That's where the YMMV (your mileage may vary) comes into play.

I guess because anybody who wants to can do that already.

And that's the point of the whole thing. It's pretty much a clearinghouse to give folks an idea of where to get a good price on something. I also think it has turned into a "New Release" list for some people.

Yeah. What Eric says, Will. We've been doing this dance for a long time. I remember years ago when the Star Wars Trilogy was finally coming to DVD, I put together a list of all the different Wal-Mart prices that were being reported in from around the country. It was quite amazing the differences!

I often find major differences at the different Wal-Marts within my own geographical area.

Thanks, Michael. That seems kinda steep, don'tcha think?!? What all is in the CE that has you paying such a premium price anyway? Target's got that beat by a lot.

Mike, another Cuse alum here. "The Express" was very good. Not great, but good. Having grown up with Ernie's story, I was hoping it would be in the "best sports move ever" type of category. I was a little disappointed that it didn't meet those lofty expectations, but it was still an under-rated movie. It's a shame it did so poorly at the box office, I think it definitely deserved better (and "Paul Blart made twice as much in one weekend...what a world). I'm just happy that Ernie's story was finally told on screen. It's amazing to me that it took this long. A truly tragic story, but Ernie still inspires me to this day and lives on in Syracuse and in his hometown of Elmira.

That means I had the unique opportunity to be on-campus (right across Irving Avenue, actually) from Archbold Stadium and the construction of the Carrier Dome. I got to see football games in both facilities during my four years there. Honestly, I much preferred Archbold. There's something fun about being in college and sitting on those concrete "shelf" seats in a blizzard watching a football game!

There's Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Bullseye, he's Woody's horse. Pete the old prospector. And, Woody, the man himself. Of course, it's time for Woody's RoundUp. He's the very best! He's the rootinest, tootinest cowboy in the wild, wild west!

Well how about WalMart online, then? Not the local stores, but the price that net users can buy from the site. I imagine most people on a forum like this tend to shop online a lot (I know I do). You'd have to call it something like "Walmart Online" for people to understand.

Here's another reason that Walmart.com should be avoided:
as an example, look up the pricing on Max Payne. The 1-disc version AND the 2-disc version are both priced at $22.86, but the 1-disc version packaged with Robocop (a Walmart exclusive) is priced at $19.86!

I'll Wait till I can get better prices on Emergency and Rockford Files, which the latter I believe was only half a season and it's still going for around what I paid for the other sets, if Universal had included the 6 or so telefilms I maybe would of Bit.

Not as fun as sitting on those concrete bleachers in the Orange Bowl sunshine!
