Friday Night Lights - Season 3 (NBC) - No DirecTV Spoilers!

Re: Friday Night Lights - Season 3 (NBC) - No DirecTV Spoilers!

That sucks about the DVDs. I was hoping that NBC would offer both cuts of each episode via seamless branching.

When I saw that Dillon left South Texas (could that be more vague?) time to score, I knew they were going to lose.

Riggins putting his cleats on the field reminded me of Rulon Gardner putting his shoes on the mat after winning gold in Athens.

That morning scene at Chez Riggins was both horrifying and hilarious. Billy peeing into the sink was just wrong. Since Lyla was already in the bathroom, he couldn't have just jumped into the shower and done the deed in there. I guess there isn't enough privacy outside for him to go pee on a tree like I had to a few times when I growing up and living at my dads (10 people; 7 women; 1 bathroom; you do the math).

When I read Tyra's essay in last week's TV Guide, I thought it was a April Fool's joke. Bastards.

I just read that and I will purchase this season set despite the music substitutions. Also, I was completely unaware that the version DirectTV aired is different from the NBC version. How many and what kinds of edits are we talking about? Are there edits in every episode? In the past, Universal has done a great job of including deleted scenes for nearly every episode as a bonus feature. Perhaps the DirectTV edits will make their way onto the season three DVD in that way. As far as the songs go, although I do not like music substitutions, I DVR the whole season anyway so I have that to fall back on. I am buying the season three DVD for the improved picture and sound quality, the special features, and to show my support for this very fine television program.

NBC has been saying "go to nbc.com for bonus footage" all season, so the scenes are probably available there.

I don't get why the DVDs wouldn't be the longer versions... makes no sense.

It makes sense if it's part of the deal with DTV. I suspect DTV has exclusive rights to the extended versions - something they can use to attract subscribers who would otherwise wait for the NBC broadcast or the DVDs.

"Underdogs" goes onto the long list of classic FNL eps - the ones where you can say "TV doesn't get any better than this.". The "night before the game" sequence was just brilliant.

Now that the show has been renewed for 2 more years, it's time to go to work on the chowderheads at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The lack of recognition of FNL at the Emmys is criminal. The acting categories alone should be stuffed wth FNL cast members.

If that's the case, it's not working, since I'm a big fan of the show and did not know until today that the DTV and NBC versions were different... so how exactly was keeping that a secret supposed to lure me into subscribing to DTV?

Re: Friday Night Lights - Season 3 (NBC) - No DirecTV Spoilers!

As far as the music subsititutions, I don't even notice the music on FNL. I can't ever recall saying to myself "the music is really good on this show, where can I find that song". I watched Season1&2 on NBC, Season 3 on DirecTV and own Seasons 1&2 on DVD. So the DirecTV, NBC and DVD music differences don't affect me. The longer episodes would be nice on DVD, or at least have them available as deleted scenes.

The Wednesday showings in the fall on DirecTV definitely work better for me than on Friday nights like NBC is doing.

I don't really notice the music in FNL, either. It's probably because none of the songs are familiar to me. So music substitutions in this show is not a deal breaker for me.

Re: FNL Music. The only song I've ever noticed (and would be upset if it was replaced) was "Deviltown" from the 1st season. Luckily the 1st season DVDs are intact.

Point taken. Anyway, I was just speculating.

The S1 DVDs have the disclaimer. If they are, in fact, intact, maybe they just put the disclaimer by default.

I remember Skid Row's "I Remember You" this season, along with the Flaming Lips. But, Landry's band sang that one.

My heart swelled with pride for all of our principals: Landry's support for Tyra; Tyra getting in; Riggins' "don't make me be that guy" speech; Matt fetching grandma home; and especially Billy kicking Timmy in the ass even though he'd dearly love the help at the garage.

Great episode, and it would have been a proper sendoff had it come down to that. Instead, I can't wait to see how the Dillon/E. Dillon rivalry will play out. Can Buddy go against everything he loves and switch his loyalties? I hope Dillon crashes and burns, but that's probably too easy.

Yes, it was a great episode and sets up next season to be "interesting times" for Coach Taylor. You have to wonder whether the jigsaw puzzle redistricting that was being attempted happened or not.

I wonder whether they'll go with Dillon winning against E. Dillon the first time they play and then E. Dillon winning in a playoff game. Or it could be that E. Dillon has no chance of making the playoffs but their game against Dillon is the deciding game for Dillon going to the playoffs or not.

I can't believe that Matt decided to throw away his future - but maybe he'll change his mind again. Which of the kids that we've seen is still going to be around next season? Is Julie the only one left anyway?

Lyla is getting a send off akin to Smash and Street's. Julie and Landry will still be around and presumably Saracen now.

I hope they don't backpedal with Riggins and Tyra just to keep them around.

Re: Friday Night Lights - Season 3 (NBC) - No DirecTV Spoilers!

One thing I guess I missed, I thought East Dillon was to be a new (second) high school for the area. Was the school (and field) they showed at the end of the episode an old junior high or something that they are converting to a high school?

Otherwise, this was an astoundingly good episode. Although I am sad to see so many familiar faces moving on, I am pumped at the prospect of TWO MORE SEASONS of Friday Night Lights!

East Dillon was a high school that had been closed and is going to be reopened. I don't think they explained why it closed. The number of students at Dillon didn't seem to be high enough that they needed 2 schools.

It will be interesting to see if the next 2 seasons will be Taylor building a new program from scratch, or if they'll find a way to get him back at Dillon (like when he quit to coach college but was back real soon). If it's the former, how much interaction will there be with the characters who are still in town?

Have to give them credit for making a season finale that would have been a satisfying series finale if not for the renewal.

If they get renewed beyond the coming 2 seasons, I hope they get the news before shooting these 2 seasons.

Is Landry just finishing his junior year? He has high grades but there was little or no mention of him deciding about college like the others.

Yep. I think there has been a bit of retconning on various character ages since the first season (Landry's relationship with Saracen implied that they were the same grade level, he had his driver's license in the first season which would more likely make him a sophomore at the time, etc) but the producers officially said this season that he and Julie were a year behind everyone else.

I thought he was a Senior as well since he has been friends with Matt, but I am not sure now. I thought this was the best season of this show and the season ending cliff-hanger was great. I am sorry I will have to wait until next January to see how this plays out. In the meantime, I will be purchasing Season 3 DVD.
