Yeah, the finale of the Smash story line was nicely done. I am not too crazy about some of the other plot lines and especially some of the character development that has been trotted out so far this season. IMO, in the past, whenever any of the main character's actions may have been misguided or misunderstood, there was always some underlying humanity at work. I no longer get that feeling. The Tyra character, in particular, seems to have completely run off the rails. Whatever her motives are, they do not appear to be the least bit honorable. And, the Riggins brothers' "copper heist" sub-plot is such an obvious plant for later in the season that it is genuinely beneath the dignity of the often brilliant story telling we've had in the past. I know this is a streamlined (and cost-reduced) Friday Night Lights and that we are lucky to have it. I just wish the program would remain truer to its original artistic vision and core values.

I knew that they had broken it off but to have it all crash down on him like that was painful to watch because the experience felt so real. Landry's a kind soul and doesn't deserve this at all. Hello, Street.

The fact that there could be drama without injecting tornadoes and murder coverup conspiracies? Exploring overused tv drama staples like racism and steroids and putting an unconventional spin on them? At least that's what I enjoyed and I think the third season got back to that.
Tyra's actions may not be honorable, but isn't that who she is? She was a selfish, misguided party slut who overcame some adversity to become a little more respectable. Is it not realistic for a 17 year old to backslide when faced with some adversity? |

Okay, so I was wrong about the direction of the copper wire sub-plot... I'll take my slice of humble pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, please. As far as the current Tyra story line goes, I don't know if it is the result of Katims' direction, but she was much more Tyra-like (for lack of a better description) this week. I liked it! I also really like the growing dynamic between Matt and his mother. She seems sincere in her intentions, and Matt certainly deserves to catch some sort of break after all the hell he's been put through with football, academics and being the primary caretaker for his grandmother. Overall, this episode was a nice return to form IMO. The hour whizzed by and I hope the producers can maintain this level of quality for the rest of the season. |
Any scene with Matt screamed sincerity and I too am liking how he and his mom are getting along.
