I have a Sony 5.1 receiver that came as part of a HTIB (sorry I don't have the exact model number, I'm at work right now). I moved into a new house about a year ago and just finally got around to hooking up the surround speakers again. When I did I noticed an intermittent buzz coming from the left surround speaker. After further inspection I noticed that it is also coming from the front right speaker (I don't know if this was always the case as I have to get right up next to the speaker to hear it).
The buzz occurs regardless of the input selected on the receiver (optical for cable box, coax for Blu-ray, RCA from the TV). I even get the buzz on the left channel with headphones connected. I have tried removing components from the receiver one at a time to see if it goes away but no luck so far.
The word "buzz" is the best word that I could come up with, but it is not a contanst sound. It's more like a small, quick bug-zapper type sound. It seems to occur every 10 seconds or so (I haven't timed it) and at the same time on both of the 2 affected channels. I have verified that it's not the speakers.
My original thought was that it was a power/interference issue, but I'm not sure. I have everything hooked up through cheapish surge protectors as I thought this would be a temporary setup. Unfortunately I have everything running off the same circuit (TV, Receiver, Blu-Ray player, cable modem, wireless router, printer, powered sub, and wireless headphones) as it's really my only option right now. I have unplugged various compnonents to test and it doesn't seem to resolve things. Everything worked fine at my previous house and it had a pretty awful electrical setup (a lot of 2-prong outlets that I had to re-wire).
My plan was to disconnect everything this weekend and try to re-run everything a bit better. I also plan to pick up one or more decent surge protectors. I've reached the end of my admittedly limited knowledge. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what I might want to look at? I wasn't looking to buy a new receiver as this does what I need it to do for the time being, but this is driving me nuts.
Thanks in advance for any help..
Brian
