(Merged) National Film Registry

#1
Rating: 0
Another 25 films were entered into the National Film Registry to bring the total number of films selected to 500. Here's the list in alphabetical order. I'm interested in what films people think should be on this list that perhaps aren't. DELIVERANCE (1972) and THE TERMINATOR (1984) were two of the 25 submitted this year.

The "criteria" for selection are:

"culturally, historically or aesthetically significant films"

To be eligible, films must be at least 10 years old, though they need not be feature-length or have had a theatrical release in order to be considered. The legislation's intent is that the broadest possible range of films be eligible for consideration.

Also, since the films must be 10 years or older, what films do you think will deserve to be submitted to the National Film Registry that haven't yet reached that age (films from about 1999 until today)?

re: (Merged) National Film Registry

The National Film Registry has impeccable taste. I appreciate the diversity of the selections each year. I'm also always thrilled when early movies are chosen, since they need the preservation the most.

re: (Merged) National Film Registry

I'm glad that "The Terminator" got some respect. I adore this movie, dare I say, maybe even more than "Terminator 2: Judgment Day". You know, I see so many people praising T2 that it seems like the original movie never happened. Well, it did, and I'm glad that the National Film Registry could see that. After all, if it wasn't for the first "Terminator", Arnold never would've gotten his catchphrase...The infamous "I'll Be Back".

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

A great way to celebrate "The Terminator"'s 25th Anniversary, don't you agree?

re: (Merged) National Film Registry

The whole point of this is to "preserve" these films, right?

But when books or paintings or other works of art are preserved, there is usually a way to view or read them.

Is there any way to view these films? Could one go to the Library of Congress and have these films screened somehow?

I'm all for film preservation... but preservation without presentation seems... incomplete.

re: (Merged) National Film Registry

Most of the films in the national film registry are copyrighted, and therefore can't be made available publicly by the National Film Preservation Foundation (which manages the Registry). However, said Foundation does release compilation DVDs of rare films in the Registry that are in the public domain.

National Film Registry Additions For 2008

It would be interesting to see a "thread" commenting on last's weeks 25 additions to the list, now having a total of 300 films in the registry.

Three selections raise questions whether they should have been added or whether there were better alternatives. The questions raised are based on the LOC comments explaining the film's selection. Granted it has a partial asian (not chinese) ancestry cast, is "Flower Drum Song" really a significant film? Which film better represents the early 1930s Universal Horror films: "Invisible Man" or the "Mummy"? Last, does the "Pawnbroker" better represent the holocaust then "Schinder's List"?

Re: National Film Registry Additions For 2008

SCHINDLER'S LIST is already part of the registry, as is (to name an example of 30s Universal horror) THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN is up there, too.

Re: National Film Registry Additions For 2008

These lists are politically motivated. Flower Drum Song was supposedly the first Hollywood movie with an (almost) all-Asian cast. That's supposed to make it important.

Many people think that's of profound importance; others couldn't care less. That's what Shakespeare meant by " ... there is nothing either good or
bad, but thinking makes it so" (Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2.)

You take 100 different listmakers, you end up with 100 different lists.

But, really, can you imagine the uproar if they made lists like this and never included movies with minority casts or creators? So they do what they have to do. If they left off Flower Drum Song, there'd be some people who'd be convinced they only did it out of anti-Asian prejudice, no other reason.

Similarly, it serves their purpose better to include The Invisible Man over The Mummy, because James Whale was gay and Karl Freund wasn't.

I happen to like both Flower Drum Song and The Invisible Man a lot, but what I don't like are these lists, awards and honors constantly being bestowed on movies. The only list which interests me is the list of my personal favorite movies, which understandably is of absolutely no interest whatsoever to anyone else.

Re: National Film Registry Additions For 2008

I think you slightly misunderstand the purpose of the National Film Registry, Joe.

In any case, of the 500 films selected for preservation so far since 1989, you have films of every type. I think they've done a good job fulfilling exactly what they set out to do as described in the recent press release: "Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act, each year the Librarian of Congress names 25 films to the National Film Registry that are 'culturally, historically or aesthetically' significant, to be preserved for all time. These films are not selected as the 'best' American films of all time, but rather as works of enduring significance to American culture."

Whether or not Flower Drum Song is a great film, it is culturally and historically significant, and therefore meets two of the possible criteria.

As for the Universal's horror films, the registry now includes Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man. With only 500 films in the registry, I'd say that's a pretty good representation.

Re: (Merged) National Film Registry

Since a film must be 10 years old to be included in the film registry, no film from 1999-2008 is eligible yet. I'm really curious what recent (1999-2000) films others think should be included in the next 10 years.
