HDMI help, not working...

I just purchased the YHT-390BL and I connected my XBOX 360 to the reciever via HDMI, then used HDMI from the reciever to the television. Sound comes out of the television but not the surround speakers. What exactly do I need to do from here to get audio from my XBOX HDMI to the reciever? Please help asap! It's driving me nuts to have everything all set up and not work.... and New Years is tonight!

Your receiver has HDMI switching (passthru). It will only pass the audio/video to another component. To get sound to the receiver, you have to use another connection (coax/optical or analog).

Did you assign the HDMI input to the Xbox?
Your manual should walk you through it. Also, make sure the Xbox is outputting a digital signal. Since I'm not familiar with Xbox, that's about all I can suggest.

So I ran an optical cable from the TV to the Receiver, still nothing... Am I doing something wrong? Or am I screwed...

That's not right. The optical output on the tv is for getting 5.1 surround from your local HD channels, when using an antenna. It's not to piggy back the connections. You need to run the optical cable from the source to the receiver. And again, you'll probably need to assign the input you use, to the Xbox.

To be specific, you have to run the optical from the Xbox to the receiver.  Here's the instructions from the MS/Xbox support site:

Connect an optical S/PDIF cable from the AV connector on the component HD AV cable to the digital audio input jack on the receiver or on the TV.
Note The component HD AV cable does not include an optical S/PDIF cable. The component HD AV cable only includes the optical connection port. Therefore, you may have to purchase an optical S/PDIF cable separately. The S/PDIF connection port is located at the end of the cable on the base of the AV connector that you use to attach to the Xbox 360 console.

Now, please tell us what's behind the 7 month delay in follow-up?  That could be a record.

the big delay was that I gave up lol... I just moved and purchased a newer and bigger LCD and really want it to work. So I'm not going to be able to use HDMI? I have to use the HD AV cable and put an optical line from that to the receiver? I can't run an HDMI from the XBOX to the receiver at all? I'm kind of new to this stuff... thanks for all your patience and help

You can run HDMI from the xbox to the receiver, it's just that it's not going to help you at all in terms of audio, and there's no real advantage vs. running it directly to the TV.  The HDMI switching on that receiver is only going to help if your TV runs out of HDMI inputs after you add some more components.

To get optical, you should be using a dongle that looks something like the following image.  May or may not have been included with your xbox.

The AV Cable I have looks like this, http://img381.imageshack.us/i/cableswitch5ia.jpg/ . So i hook this up to my 360, hook the optical into that, and run the AV and optical to the receiver? I've done this and still nothing... When doing this i get no Audio or Video.

So that looks like the component/AV cable.  If you are going to use that, instead of the dongle I pictured, that disables the HDMI video out.  You'll have to connect the other end of the component cable, the green/blue/red jacks into a component video input on your TV.  (The yellow composite jack can be left dangling, red/white audio can be connected to the TV also, though you won't be using those with the receiver.)  Then switch video on TV to the component video in.

Alternately, you could run the component video into the receiver, with an additional component video out going to the TV, but again there's no real reason to do that unless you have other component video devices (a DVD player perhaps) that you'd like to switch using the receiver.

As for audio, that should be working.  You have to make sure that you have the right input selected on the receiver.  Did you plug into the top optical marked CD or the middle marked DTV/CBL?  You have to select the corresponding input, OR go into the setup/input/input assignment menu to point the input you want to use to that jack.

Also make sure your "audio sel" (hit AMP then 0/audio sel on the remote) is set to "auto".
