I would have to agree with full bit rate lossy tracks kicking A. Had to push several items back on the shelf after a week-end of Hellboy II, Tropic Thunder, and Wanted. Just plain ol' DD and DTS at -20dB!

I've had similar experiences with the "lossy" audio--makes me far less motivated to "upgrade" my otherwise fine AVR.

By the way, in addition to the PS3, I also own the Panasonic BD-55, bought it for the above mentioned 'analog outputs, and I still find myself wanting to use the PS3 as my primary BD player. For DVDs and BDs without HD audio, I always use the PS3. This is inspite of the fact that the Panasonic BD-55 is rated as one of the best, if not the best standalone BD players to date.

So what does that mean when you have the hd audio decoded externally rather than onboard?

are you talking about a receiver decoding it?

please correct me if im wrong.

thanks and aloha

That's correct. The PS3 is unable to bitstream DTS HD MA, but it can decode it internally. This widens your options in terms of HDMI receivers, but you will still need one for the HD audio codecs, as they cannot be sent over SPDIF connections, and the PS3 lacks multichannel analog outs.
