PS3 charging station
12/27/08 at 10:17pm
I got a PS3 with 4 controllers and am looking for a good charging station for them. I had a charging station for the Wii and one of the controllers got fried because the station kept charging it after it was fully charged. Are there any with an auto shut-off that will solve this problem? Thanks

Re: PS3 charging station
Don't know if either the Nyko and/or the Energizer ones have auto-off capability, but both come highly recommended; I have the Energizer one myself--it can charge up to four controllers simultaneously (you'll need to provide your own USB cables if you want to charge two of them). The only thing going against it is that the charging lights (red when charging, green when fully charged) are kinda bright if you don't have the charging stand tucked away out of sight.

Thanks for the heads up, Tony! I wasn't aware of the Energizer unit and just ordered one from Amazon. It gets great reviews. I've always plugged my controllers into the PS3 to recharge and that's a royal pain because they don't charge when you turn the PS3 off (which I like to do to keep the heat down). Not a bad unit for under $30.

How long have you kept your controllers in the charger for? Does this mean that I would have to wait around to take them out right when they are done charging?Sanyo PLV-Z60 720P HT projector Focupix 84" screen

Can't you just plug the USB cable into a computer to charge them?

Yes you can. I have several USB options that don't involve keeping the PS3 in the "ON" position (which is required for some strange reason if you want to use its ports to charge controllers). Several computers as well as other devices (my Panamax protection units) all have USB ports. However, the Energizer dock is a far more elegant solution because you don't need to have USB cables to charge the first two controllers. You only need USB cables if you want to charge up to two additional controllers with the charging station. One of the main conveniences of the Energizer station to me is being able to cut down the cable clutter. This unit really seems to do a nice job.

Re: PS3 charging station
The Nyko I have just plugs into AC... no USB at all. I've had controllers sitting there for over a month with zero problems (I often play solo). The only issue is that once the controller is charged it will no re-charge unless you pick up the controller and place it back on the charger (i.e. no constant trickle charge).

Can you only charge a PS3 sixaxis controller whilst the station is on?
I tried to do it in standby mode and hoped it would charge (a little similar to a mobile phone) overnight, but it seems that i should have left the playstation on. Is this correct?

Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

Hm, I just remembered that I got one of those Rock Band-branded USB hubs for $5. It has its own AC plug and might work to charge my controllers. I'll have to check that out.
