If I have 1080i input only, will the 1080p players work?

I have a 4 year old HD TV that is 1080i. (55 inch Mitsu Rear Projection) I keep on look at the specs of the Blu Ray players and they all have 1080p signals. I can't tell from the specs if there is a 1080i signal as well. Do the Blu Ray players have 1080i output as another option usually? What are my options other than buying a new TV?

Yes, I have a 1080i tv as well, and the players output 480i, 480p, 720i, 720p, 1080i and 1080p, but of course we can't take advantage of the 1080p. But 1080i looks pretty awesome in the meantime.

I considered holding off on Blu-ray until I got a full 1080p tv, but decided last weekend to use my Christmas bonus and take the plunge now anyway, and I'm VERY glad I did. One day I'll have a new 1080p 24f tv and I'll be even more thrilled with the picture, but I'm happy I decided not to wait before enjoying the Blu.

Don't worry about holding off, Daniel. As far as your eyes can tell, there is no difference between 1080i and 1080p.

Both are full 1080 HD signals; the information just arrives on screen differently. I would hazard a guess that over 99.99% of viewers cannot tell the difference between the two.

Go ahead and go Blu, you'll be glad you did!

Man,1080i is beautiful, and ditto Clinton, you would have to be a trained specialist to see the difference between 1080i and 1080p. Go for it.

Personally, I am not a big believer in the use of 1080p as anything other than a marketing tool. Until movies/TV shows are produced in 1080i, I will be just fine. Now, for 3D video games and TV, there may be something there. But, I am not holding my breath. As it is, my biggest WOW moment was when I went from 480i to 480p with my DVD player. I was disappointed when I got my first HD broadcast signal at home because the (perceived) quality jump between 480i and 480p was bigger that the jump between 480p and 1080i.
In retrospect, that was a silly reaction.
