Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

I was looking at the list of episodes which haven't been digitally remastered (a Paramount website which was linked here I think). I saw "Chain of Events" which I already knew was the only episode from Season 5 which hadn't been digitally remastered. But there was also "Pig in a Blanket" at the top of the list. Nobody here had mentioned that that episode hadn't been digitally remastered. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I thought "Nine Dragons" had a soft picture quality when it was shown on Granada Plus some years ago. But that episode wasn't in the 'not digitally remastered' list.

Was the last episode of Season 11 "Year of the Horse" a two-part or two hour episode? I thought it was, but in the Booking Hawaii Five-O book they don't say it is a two-part or two-hour episode.

EDIT: Just looked at the Season 11 guide on the Hawaii Five-O fan site. "Year of the Horse" was a two hour episode. So hopefully if CBS/Paramount release all 12 seasons of Hawaii Five-O on DVD they put the two hour version on the DVD and don't split the episode into two.

Just finished watching season 5, and absolutely loved it. Anyone know if there is a release date for season 6 yet?

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

I have it on good authority that the HAWAII FIVE-0 sets, while not selling in huge numbers, have a good retention rate between seasons, indicating a fairly substantial and loyal fanbase. Loyal enough for 12 seasons of DVDs? I doubt it, but if they get to season 9 I will be thrilled!

One other positive sign is the new FIVE-0 series coming next fall from CBS, with an alleged initial 13 episode order. If CBS Paramount follows the same pattern they did with 90210, we may get another season or 2 on DVD later this year after the April release to tie in with the new show.

What if after season 9 the following could happen (an idea I've just thought of) :

CBS/Paramount release a boxset of seasons 10-12 digitally remastered. They could start on it now while in the meantime they release seasons 6-9 separately.

Oh and I hope you all here have a happy new year! I have been made to feel welcome on here since I joined earlier this year. Very much enjoyed the discussions about different shows on DVD.

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

Call me morbid and I think it's unlikely, but I'm very curious to see if "Bored, She Hung Herself" will ever get released on DVD. I know it's a pretty notorious episode and the liklihood is slim, but I'd love to see it, just as a novelty.

So much TV...

So little money!

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

Does anyone remember during what season the "V For Vashon" episodes aired?

I very clearly remember watching this three parter as a kid and never seeing it again. I think it was probably the first time I remember seeing a nighttime program continued from one episode to the next (not counting BATMAN).

I would definately like to start with that season.

it's in season 5 - the boxset that recently was released. The three episode arc does seem to be the best of the series

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

I bought recently an old issue of an episode guide magazine called Epi-Log. This issue had a complete episode guide for Hawaii Five-O and Hill Street Blues. One of the things I really liked about the Hawaii Five-O guide were the photos I had not seen before. They were promo pictures. It's interesting seeing from page to page how Jack Lord's appearance changed from the early seasons in the late 60's, through to the final years in the late 70's.

Thanks for sharing this Jeff. That's five months since Season 5 was released on Region 1. If there's another five month wait for Season 7 that won't be released until September. I was hoping CBS/Paramount might have squeezed a third release out before the end of 2009.

I hope we do see Seasons 7 & 8 in 2009 after the new Five-O series starts on CBS.

Is there any more info about this new Five-O series other than it starts in the autumn?

Looking at the list of episodes which have and haven't been digitally remastered for syndication on that website which was linked in a thread here, I was surprised to see that "Nine Dragons" and "Woe to Wo Fat" had been digitally remastered, as I remember seeing them having a soft picture quality when watching them on Granada Plus a few years ago.

If (and I hope they do) CBS/Paramount release the remainder of the seasons on DVD I hope they put the feature-length versions of the episodes "Murder - Eyes Only", "Nine Dragons", "The Year of the Horse" and "The Lion in the Streets" in their respective boxsets.

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

I've been watching a bunch of these from Seasons 3 & 4, and I can't believe how cool this show is. Yes, there are some incredible situations, yes, Lord is sometimes wooden to the point of weird, yes the Hawaiian cops don't get to do much, but it simply worked: a great show!

The plots are always filled with great, suspenseful twists.

Count me in for the purported less-than-stellar seasons!

How did Lord's appearance change? I heard that really late in the game he actually had a Ceasar haircut for a while, and wore a Sarafi jacket?

Lord stayed in pretty good shape all throughout though - again, from what I've seen!

My wife and I laugh about Danno looking like George Bush!

No pictures, but I do recall in seasons 10 and 11 that he had some shorter, Spock-like bangs in some episodes, which may have given him the appearance of a Caesar cut a few times, but for the most part he always had his traditional teased hairstyle. I don't ever recall him wearing a safari suit, beyond some of the atrocious tan leisure suits he wore in seasons 11 and 12.

His facial appearance. Everyone changes in appearance as they age. It's because the show ran for a long time. Jack Lord looks youthful in the early seasons and more older by the end of the 70's.

What's also interesting is his sideburns. They become a star in their own right!

Rumor has it that the sideburns had their own agent.

On a sad note, it didn't receive much press, but a Five-0 mainstay passed away earlier this month. Harry Endo, who played the forensic savvy Che Fong, passed away at age 87. See more here.

For a show of fairly recent vintage, relatively few members of the main cast are stil alive (James MacArthur, Al Harrington come to mind)

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

Just finished the S5 set...mostly very entertaining episodes although there were some that were bit mediocre IMO. The "Ben" character is a nice addition. Biggest drawback are the big leaps in logic that pop up from time to time in these episodes.

My favorite episode by far was the Andy Griffith one; it's an absolute gem. The scene of Andy interacting with the hotel clerk is laugh out loud riot (viewers will know it when they see it).

Looking around Mister Mike's excellent website I learned something I did not know: Lord wore a hairpiece! I knew he wore lifts (you can see the "special" shoes on occasion but this is the first I read about the toupee. Googling turned up an interview with Glenn Cannon ("John Manicote") in which he said Lord's rug cost $30k - $40k. WOW!

Question for Five 0 experts: because of the on location nature of this show, was it normal procedure to import an actor and use him/her in multiple episodes at once to save costs? In the S5 set I saw highly recognizable charactor actor Doug Kennedy in 3 episodes and I believe Simon Oakland was in at least two.

Reading that about Jack Lord wearing a toupee a day or two ago spoilt the illusion for me. I always thought that was his own hair in Hawaii Five-O. Now I've got to try and block what I read out of my mind.

Hope Season 6 does come out in April. I doubt Seasons 7 & 8 will be out by the end of the year, but it would be nice.

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

I thought earlier today that it would be nice if CBS/Paramount released both the seventh and eighth seasons at the same time this autumn when the new Hawaii Five-O show starts in the US.

For the seventh season DVD boxset it would great if they included all filmed episodes of the Khiegh Dheigh series Khan! as an extra. The four aired episodes were shown during Hawaii Five-O's seventh season in February 1975.

I checked TVShowsOnDVD's news archive list tonight to see how long it took from them announcing the Season 5 set to when the front cover artwork was posted on the website. But both the set announcement and front cover artwork were posted in the same article.

What should be on the front cover for the Season 6 DVD boxset? - Part 1

This time they (CBS/Paramount) should rectify the mistake they didn't, couldn't or wouldn't (hope that's not harsh) change with using a 1973 image of Jack Lord from Hawaii Five-O. People said on here at the time the Season 5 front cover artwork was posted on TVShowsOnDVD, that the image of Jack Lord used was not from Season 5. Now I'm assuming all Season 5 episodes were filmed in 1972. This is based on what I read in the Booking Hawaii Five-O book about Season 12, that the final episode of the series was filmed in December 1979. So an image of Jack Lord from Season 6 will be from 1973.

What should be on the front cover for the Season 6 DVD boxset? - Part 2

The main image will be of Jack Lord. If CBS/Paramount place a banner along the bottom of the front cover the other Season 6 main cast members should be in there - Danno, Ben and Chin Ho Kelly. Duke could be on the front cover as well (like with the Season 5 front cover). But the actor who played him wasn't in the main cast until Season 8 or 9.

The background image - I'd like to see an image from the title sequence. The clock tower, the building with that statue or the hotel from a distance when the camera is moving towards Jack Lord on the hotel room balcony?

I'd like to see a mention on the back cover of Hawaii Five-O's only Emmy win, for the music in the Season 6 premiere "Hookman". That might help boost sales. I haven't asked anyone about that. My own suggestion.

As there are no two-part stories, three-part stories and two hour episodes in Season 6 there should be Jack Lord episode promos/intros for all 24 episodes of Season 6. If there is an episode promo/intro for the season premier "Hookman" I can't wait to hear the start of it, if it's the same as previous episode promos/intros I've heard/seen so far (from when I've tested out the Hawaii Five-O boxsets I've got so far) :

"This is Jack Lord inviting you to join us next for..Hookman".

Re: Hawaii Five: O: The Sixth Season and beyond

Little inconsistencies like using the wrong season image of a character on the box art are annoying, but hey, if it helps sell more units, then I guess I'm all for it (but if it's a lack of attention to detail, then it bugs me). Jack Lord's sideburns and wave of hair started getting a little out of control in the show's middle years, so perhaps that may be why they avoided using a season 5 image on the box. We'll see what season 6 brings (I'm not holding my breath, as season 5 originally had Kono on the cover before CBS-P was alerted to the error).

I doubt CBS-P will give us any extras at all, such as the ones you suggested, beyond the episodic promos, which are cool in that they haven't been seen in syndication, but they really aren't what I would call bonus features since they are technically part of the episodes' original broadcasts.

Play.com must have only updated the Season 5 front cover artwork on their listing page for the boxset in the last few days. They've finally put the correct artwork (the same as the Region 1 version) with Ben instead of Kono on their site!

I'll be getting my copy of Season 5 next Monday. Quite a busy release day next Monday (also Season 5 of Mission: Impossible, Season 2 of The Invaders and Season 2 of Diagnosis Murder, along with Friday the 13th Parts 2-8 repackaged). A week later Season 6 of Law and Order finally makes it to the UK on DVD.
