So far, I think there is only an HD-DVD.

I have the HD-DVD and it looks amazing. I just got into Blu Ray, so I was curious when this will be on BD too.

The Hi Def Digest site shows it as pending.

Heaven only knows!?! It could be a long wait. I decided to purchase a HD-DVD version cheaply to tide me over.

This is one title I'm especially glad to have on HD DVD as it could be years before it makes an appearance on BD (particularly if we count from its release on HD DVD).

Why do you think of it as a "tide over"? As long as one has a working HDDVD player, there's no "tiding over" involved (it's extremely unlikely that Warner would do a new transfer or add features for BR).

What leads you to believe it would possibly be years? The existing transfer and features could just easily be ported over to Blu-Ray

This is definitely one of the titles I am looking forward to on Blu-ray.

Well, you know these Media Companies - they have to have the 199% ABSOLUTELY perfect marketing opportunity to release catalog titles. And only the GODS know when that will occur for "Forbidden Planet"

A BD release could be when they release the theatrical remake. But I hope it's a lot sooner.

Re: Any news on Forbidden Planet coming to Blu-Ray?

I have a feeling WB's will get all the titles that were released on HD-DVD released by the end of the year on BLU-RAY to finish the titles off, and catch up. If the materials are there for the release no use pushing back on making money.

Yup, that's the only thing the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still was good for

I agree ... most remakes are really bad, and the only great point is getting a re-issue of the original film.

But if the title didn't make as much money as they wanted/thought it would on HD DVD, then they may not rush out to release it on Blu-ray if they expect it to do similar sales - especially with the state of the economy now vs. when the HD DVD was released.
Does anyone even click on these "My Collection" links?

Re: Any news on Forbidden Planet coming to Blu-Ray?

I watched the DVD yesterday (upscaled) and was amazed by how good it looked. I never saw the HD-DVD, but I imagine it was sublime to behold. I really hope this title shows up on Blu sooner rather than later.

Anne Francis in HD? I am SO there.

Forbidden Planet is one of the few remaining caveats of getting suckered into the HD DVD format.

I'm in no rush for a BD now unless my player suddenly craps out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Warner holds it until 2011 for its 55th Anniversary.

I  wouldn't be surprised if anniversary dates for this title are meaningless to Warner.

This is, along with Mutiny on the Bounty and Grand Prix one of my favorite HD DVDs.

Forbidden Planet and Pride & Prejudice are the two HD-DVDs I find myself revisiting more than any others that I have.

I still regularly use my HD DVD player (with over 170 titles, I'll be using it for a while) and I'm especially happy I picked up a number of then (and still) HD DVD exclusives like Forbidden Planet.  I know they'll eventually get a BD release, but until then, I get to enjoy them now in hi-def (and with Forbidden Planet and Mutiny on the Bounty, two films I enjoy revisiting, for some years already).

Thought I'd bump this thread. Given how great the current Wizard of Oz and North By Northwest blu-rays are, I can't help but continue to pine away for the Forbidden Planet BD.

Agreed.  I picked up the super-cool Robby the Robot Hallmark ornament the other day, which REALLY made me want to watch Forbidden Planet.  The DVD was my only option.  Oh, the horror!  :D

I Really want this released and Grand Prix and Mutiny on the Bounty. I am hooping for 2010 releases on all those left behind HD titles that way they can at least clear that list.

I read that Warners has set September 2010 for Forbidden Planet along with Mars Attacks and THX 1138.  Lost In Space was also mentioned but I kind of want to act like that film was never made.

Of course this was not an official announcement, just laid out plans.  November 2010 is to bring the 1935 Mutiny On The Bounty, but I suspect you are talking about the Marlon Brando version, which would look great on BR.

Here is a link to an article.

Also mentioned as coming to blu-ray

Ace Ventura, Hamlet, What’s Up Doc? and National Lampoon’s European Vacation
The Maltese Falcon and Treasure Of The Sierra Madre

Article warns that plans this far in advance, Fall 2010, are likely to change.

LOL Martin.

Seriously though, I'll quickly grab THX 1138 when it arrives.

And Mars Attacks! is a great guilty pleasure.
