Re: TCFHE Press Release: The Robe (DVD/Blu-ray)

It was interesting that Schawn from Fox said the B&W separation masters for The Robe were recombined digitally, one assumes using an Ultra Resolution like process to ensure proper registration.
Quote:
Schawn: There are a set of YCM sep masters that were made in 1953. We scanned them at 4K as well, and then digitally recombined them. They were used as the secondary source for picture restoration.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: The Robe (DVD/Blu-ray)

I finally got my copy in the mail today and watched it tonight.

I was so impressed with the digital clean-up. No specks or debris at all. The film is now such a pleasure to watch and listen to.

Enjoyed a couple of the bonus features as well (the "making of" feature and "The Cinemascope Story.")

Then I put in the DVD of DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATORS. Augh! Now we need to push for that to get a digital clean-up. Hard to watch it after the pristine quality of THE ROBE.

There are some 1080p clips of DEMETRIUS on the documentaries, and even in high def, it's in need of a restoration. On the other hand, the clips from DAVID AND BATHSHEBA look great in high def. Hopefully we'll see that one on BD one of these days.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: The Robe (DVD/Blu-ray)

Schawn Belston indicated during the chat that DEMETRIUS has already been restored. He does not make the decisions as to what gets released but it sounds like the elements are ready when FHE decides to release it.

An HD version was aired in the UK and it probably comes from the same source - better than the DVD but not comparable to The Robe.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: The Robe (DVD/Blu-ray)

Has anyone had definitive proof now, that the Blu-ray of "The Robe" is really region locked? I'd love to order it immediately, but can't play Region A locked discs.

It has been confirmed region free by AxelMusic!

Re: TCFHE Press Release: The Robe (DVD/Blu-ray)

Coming from Fox that is a real surprise. Perhaps they have been reading my complaints to Fox UK! I'm going to have to buy it - despite having already bought the DVD thinking that the BD was bound to be locked.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: The Robe (DVD/Blu-ray)

DEMETRIUS is currently available for high-definition rental through Apple TV ( which requires Apple's AppleTV box ) , which I plan to sample one of these days since I got such a kick out of Jay Robinson's performance as Caligula in THE ROBE.

That would be absolutely fantastic, and sorry that I ask again, but at AxelMusic it says "This title has not yet been tested and confirmed Region Free/locked", so how did you get this information?

Hmm, that's odd. It was mentioned on that site plus I got an email notification from them. My order is currently on 'packing' but if it turns out region locked (and I would really hate that) I'll have to send it back.

@Brian Borst

Even if I'm very impatient, I think I rather wait until you receive your Blu-ray. Please let us know, whether it is Region Locked or not! Thank you.

Me too. It looks like Axel are having second thoughts! Someone claims on another site to have tried the disc on a UK player and found it to be region locked.

Well, then how did AxelMusic get their information? It was personally checked by someone, wasn't it? Some conclusive information would be nice here . But I guess I'll check it out when the disc has arrived.

I ordered this as soon as it appeared as though the disc was region free. I've just received and tested it and can confirm that it is REGION LOCKED. Sorry folks. The odd thing is that I see that Fox's South Pacific is apparently region free. Where's the logic?

Might be that The Robe is the last catalog title from Fox that is region locked and South Pacific the first one that is unlocked - if that is the case I doubt that anybody will have to complain in the future.

Still the whole region locking of older titles was a bad joke from the start - never understood why a studio would do that as even taking into account the twisted desire to have newer Blu-Ray titles region locked it never made sense for older titles.

Can't see any logic at all. If this was a new blockbuster, I would understand a bit, but not with a classic of 1953. The more, as there are no signs so far of an international release. Many Fox classics are never released in Germany, and if so, some of them are only YEARS later.

But thank you, Douglas R! Now at least we know for sure.

EDIT: Sorry for posting twice (almost) the same. But sometimes it's really strange. My post only appears hours later, so I wrote again, as I thought it didn't work the first time around. And yes, I pressed the refresh button.

So far Fox has released all the older titles that I have watched with region coding, so this is not exactly news with regard to The Robe.

But it is great news that South Pacific is not locked Hopefully this is the first of many classic releases by Fox without region locking.

For %&#$ sake. I'm not happy at all by this. I can understand region locking a title when you don't have the rights for it overseas, but that doesn't apply here. Of course none of this would matter if they would actually release The Robe in the rest of the world, but there hasn't been one announcement for that either. Oh well.

Re: TCFHE Press Release: The Robe (DVD/Blu-ray)

This one is locked but you're lucky when you own a Code-B Panasonic BD30 player. "The Robe" runs via the Functions trick. Just press the "Functions" button on your remote control when the "Attention - This disc has been coded for Region A only ..." screen is shown. Then choose "Top Menu" and the Blu-ray starts with the main menu. I tested it on a Panasonic BD35 from a friend, too, but it doesn't work. Seems to work only on the BD30 and BD50 machines.

I wonder if Panasonic will correct this "malfunction" with later firmware versions ?
