With its 25th Anniversary coming up in '09 does anyone know if Warner intends to put out a special edition for The Neverending Story? I heard they are doin one for Gremlins and Goonies (though not sure if they are going to be anything different from the DVD version), just wondering whats in the future for this classic 80s movie.

Re: The Neverending Story

We may see an import release for it (ala the current BD version of Goonies) but I haven't heard anything about a Region A release next year. Considering the age of the current SD release (released 11/2001) there is a good chance at least for another SD re-release.

There already is a German import release for it.

Cool! Hadn't seen that anywhere yet. Any word if the PQ/AQ make it worth picking up?

Re: The Neverending Story

Any idea which version of the film is included on that German Blu-ray disc? I would have expected it to be the unreleased-in-the-U.S German cut, but I believe that cut has only ever been available dubbed into German, whereas the listing for that BD mentions only English audio. Is it the same cut that's always been available in the U.S., or is it the alternate German cut with English audio?

Or am I just wrong about the various versions of the movie?

I'm afraid I don't know much about this Blu-ray Disc other than it exists.

On the other forum, I found the following impression:

Just watched it and here are some quick impressions:

Image is 2.35:1, sharp and colorful, but the source has some age related speckling scattered throughout. Video codec is VC-1 (couldn't tell you the bitrate, though). I didn't spot any edge enhancement, but wasn't really looking for it. No obtrusive noise reduction to be found, the image retained moderate film-like grain and was quite pleasing. There should be no ugly surprises here for people who understand Hi-Def and how it relates to older film sources.

Audio comes in two flavors, DD 5.1 at 640 kb/s and DTS 5.1 at 1.5 mb/s. (No mention of DTS-HD/MA anywhere in the menus or on the packaging.) The bass was boomy but subtle, only calling attention to itself in the somewhat over the top disco beats of some of the music.

The movie starts right away after a couple of logos and Dutch copyright notices. The movie defaults to Dutch subs but they can be toggled off with the subtitle button. The pop-up menu is in english and features chapter selection and audio set-up only. There are absolutely no extras.

The cover features the english title on the front and spine, but the blurb on the back is in Dutch. The disc comes in the thicker Blu-Ray case and has an insert touting other releases from distributor Dutch Filmworks. The disc surface text is also entirely in english over a facsimile of the cover artwork.

Oh, one more thing. If you let the movie run to the end of the credits it turns itself off. (No root menu to return to.)

Bought it at freerecordshop.nl and it came to 22.97 euros incl. shipping to Norway. (I lived in the Netherlands for two years so the online ordering posed no problems.)

Couldn't say about regions as I only have my euro PS3 to play it on. Dutch Filmworks' release of Lord of War was region locked, so caveat emptor. EDIT: The back cover says region ABC so you guys across the Atlantic should be okay.

It sounds like it has a passable transfer with lossy audio and no extras. I'm not sure what cut of the film it is. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen this film before.

The audio choices available on the BD release mimicks that of the DVD release from Dutch FilmWorks back in 2003. That DVD is the US/International cut and not the longer German one so the BD would be the same in that regard.

Re: The Neverending Story

HighDefDigest.com just posted their review of the import and it wasn't very favorable...

I hate to say it, but unless you’re an absolute Fantasia junkie, skip this one and invest in imports with better transfers, fuller surround sound, and more supplemental features.

I hope this movie gets a good 25th anniversary edition this year... I hope Warner is reading this!
