Best sub for around $3500?

HI All,

This is my first post to your group. I am trying to decide on a sub to go in my dedicated home theatre. My AV guy is suggesting the Paradigm signature sub 25 for $4000. While this souds like a great sub, I am not so sure I need the best or the top of the line. The room I need the sub for is 14W, 18L, 14H...So it is a pretty big room.

What are your suggestions for the best value in the $3500 range?

THANKS,
Jeff

Re: Best sub for around $3500?

That's quite a budget! I don't see budgets like that around here very often. For $3500, you can buy two top-of-the-line subwoofers instead of just one. Having two subwoofers can help get a flatter frequency response. SVS and Hsu Research are two of the most popular subwoofer brands in home theater circles. SVS's top of the line subwoofer, the PB-13 Ultra, sells for $1599-1699, depending on finish. Hsu Research's top of the line, the ULS-15, sells for $1299-$1499, depending on finish. You can't go wrong with either choice. Neither one will have any trouble performing in your room, as long as it's set up correctly.

The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again.

Re: Best sub for around $3500?

I'd add Epik Subwoofers and Elemental Designs to the list.

All 4 of the internet direct companies are great to work with. The guys at SVS met at this forum and started the company when helping each other build subs. The owner of Epik is also a member here. He gets his drivers from who designed the Resonant Engineering XXX series car audio subs. eD doesn't have a presence here but they have their on forum and you can easily reach the sub designer or even the owner of the company when you call.

But for that budget, I'd go with a custom sub(s). That opens up thousands of options. Does this room have an attic above, basement below or a garage beside it? Then an infinite baffle sub will give you bass better than anything you can buy. I'm trying to find time to finish installing my four 18" IB sub in my theater room.
