Question about suround sound

Im new so if i posted this in the wrong thread i apoligize

heres my problem

i just picked up a sony sava-700 suround sound system used. it works great sounds awesome when i hook up my dvd player to the 5.1 (multi channel inputs) i only get sound from my sub and front speakers. i moved wires around to test the rear input and center input and they work so im assuming my dvd player outputs are shot or does it depend on what dvd im watching. was watching the Dark Knight. my question- is it worth buying a new dvd player so the inputs work or should i just run it through the normal audio inputs (red and white) on the sava which sound great to me. will the sound be greatly improved with the 5.1 (multi channel) working properly. i dont mind spending the money but just want to know if it is worth it.

Thanks for all your help in advance

Re: Question about suround sound

The SAVA-700 has 5.1 inputs? Based on a quick-and-dirty Google search, I thought it was strictly a Dolby Pro logic system. Does it have any digital audio inputs?

In answer to your question, not every disc has a 5.1 channel digital sound track, and not all the ones that do default to it. But I wouldn't think The Dark Knight is one of those. You probably need to go into the setup menu of your player (it would help to have the make and model number of it) and configure your audio output options.

I might not be calling it the right name but it has a inputs for center, sub front right, front left, right rear, left rear the dvd players is sony dvp ns400d is says on the front that it has a built in dolby digital 5.1 chanel decoder. the dvd says on the back dolby digital english: dolby suround 5.1 i have bin looking for the manual online for the dvd player but i cant find it anywhere.
i went and check the sava and one of the input selections is 5.1 suround which is the one i had it on when i was trying to watch the movie. so im assuming it does have the right imputs

Re: Question about suround sound

Go in to the speaker setup of the DVD player, hit setup with no disc in player or the disc stopped. Make sure you have speakers set to "small" for all speakers that you actually have, and that the test tone from there works.

Re: Question about suround sound

Also, when using 5.1 multi-channel inputs, you don't push the "DVD" button, to watch a dvd. Push the "Multi-Channel" button.

Not sure about using 5.1 multi-channel outputs, with pro logic system, but you might need to go into the dvd player's setup menus, and set the audio output to "Bitstream", for it to output 5.1 surround. You normally have to do this when using digital audio inputs. You really need a new receiver......
Good luck!
