Audio surround connections

Im trying to get TV audio from my LCD TV to play thu my surround sound receiver. The only audio out jacks on the TV are a set of red and white analog and an orange coaxial. I currently am running a coaxial audio cable from the TV's audio out to a coaxial audio in on the surround receiver. I also have a DVD player hooked directly to the TV using and HDMI cable. On some TV channels I get good audio thru the surround sound speakers and on some channels the audio is muted. Is that because some channels are broadcasting digital audio and some are not. And, if thats the case, can I add a set of red and white analog audio cables to an aux connection on the surround receiver.

Tell us a little more, like are you using satellite, cable or fios.

I'm connected to Time Warner Cable but have no converter box, Cable is directly to TV.

Sounds to me that's the issue, analog channels will have a picture and usually not the best at that. I don't think the t.v. has the capability to pass analog sound through the digital output (coax). This may very well mean a converter box would do it or simply connect the audio analog directly to the receiver so that you can get sound from all channels.

However, by using the coaxial cable directly hooked up to the t.v. can limit you depending on the company. Using the analog connectors (red and white) may not work for various reasons, and it's all due to the quality of the signal you are getting. My vote would be to get a converter box and utilize the best connection video and audio especially for HD.

hey kevashaz, If you add in an analogue connection from the tv to reciever, you will have to switch between inputs on the reciever when you change to a non digital channel. to avoid switching You could always hook it up like this:

DVD player-
Audio/Video- To tv via HDMI
Digital Audio-Coaxial from Dvd player To reciever

TV Out-
Analogue to reciever (using Pro-logic)


So the real question at hand is, Is having to switch between inputs worth having digital sound from Tv? Hope this is helpful to you.
