Round 12? how many times has "Oz" been re-released?

Amazon has art work up for both the standard and Blu Ray releases of "The Wizard of OZ' and "Gone With the Wind" both to come in deluxe packaging - like the recent "I am Legend" set - no release date is set yet. Both celebrating their 70TH Anniversary in 2009

I can't wait to see Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind on Blu-ray. That much is good news.

Are these newly remastered? by a different personage than before? Is there any indication that the willful, destructive, and highly subjective color alterations imposed on the previous box-sets have been corrected?

I'm interested to see what additional special features these will have. There isn't much more they could do, but off the top of my head it would be great to have some of those GWTW screen tests available in full.

As if that will ever happen . Led Zeppelin didn't want Stairway to Heaven to be used in Almost Famous, so Pink Floyd is never going to let a studio use an entire album just as a bonus feature. It would cost an enormous amount, I think.
But it's great to dream, I guess .

I can live without the Pink Floyd album. I actually saw the two synced up in a movie theater that ran it off of a DVD dub of a dub of a dub of a VHS tape. It was an excruciating experience, and it cured me of any desire to listen to Pink Floyd ever again.

Well they did allow TCM to broadcast the film back in 2000 with Dark Side of the Moon as a SAP track so its not completely impossible.

OK- just what new extras will these releases have that the last ones didn't? If it's basically the same stuff as before, no thank you. I already have the OZ 3-disc set, and the GWTW 4-disc set. If stuff is created for additional discs, I'll change my mind. Details, anyone?

And Tony, we do know, but it's a great discussion subject, nonetheless. I've also seen bits of it on YouTube, and it didn't totally convince me either. I'd like to do it properly, but my copy of WoO is in PAL, so it's not going to sync very well.
Now 'Echoes' and 'Jupiter Beyond the Infinite' from 2001: A Space Odyssey work together extremely well, down to the length of the sequence and the song. It's a good experience (again, look on YouTube).

I had the first two stand-alone DVDs of WIZARD OF OZ (first MGM and then WB), but never bought the recent box set of what, only a couple of years ago?? I'm glad I didn't bite, so I can buy the Blu-ray and not feel too upset.

Well, I also enjoy Great Gig in the Sky to the tornado scene.

I'm sure some of you are aware that filmmakers use temp tracks while creating and editing their films. Often these are favorite albums of the director or the editor.

^Which is kinda odd since The Matrix is allegedly supposed to synch to Wish You Were Here.

In regards to on-disc extras, I highly doubt there are going to be any as these sets were pretty packed in their 3 and 4 disc configurations to begin with (Wizard of Oz was also the first WB special edition with copius amounts of feelies, so I'm not sure what can be added there). Its just going to be another repackaging that'll probably only sell well on Blu-ray.

This is exactly what I'm expecting. Frankly, it looks like "Casablanca" all over again. Great for the BR folks, but an expensive retread for the SD crowd...unless you're into paper products. For the member who asked earlier whether the color correction will change, my expectation is a resounding "no". I don't even expect the disk IDs to change, let alone anything regarding the transfer.

Is the color actually screwed up on the older "ultimate edition" DVDs of THE WIZARD OF OZ and GONE WITH THE WIND? Was this verified, and by whom? I don't own either one, but was considering a purchase

I just double-checked my library and the blu-ray purchase of "The Wizard of Oz" will be my fifth purchase on DVD/Blu-ray.

I have the 1997 release, two 1999 releases including the Deluxe Edition and the 2005 3-disc Collectors Edition.

I'm a fool for Judy Garland in Technicolor.

Some people here believe the Ultra-rez rendition of Oz features tones that are a shade too warm when compared to the 2000 dvd, an even smaller minority (mainly Richard--W and... Richard--W) believe GWTW is too yellow.

MGM's Oz is soft and oversaturated, their GWTW looks a bit "autocorrected" in white levels and has a lot of edge enhancement. Warner's Oz remaster from '99 is better, but has weak contrast and is eaten up with compression artifacting. Not sure of the reference standpoint, but the '05 Oz master looks identical in color timing to the dye-transfer print I had a chance to see. Only on the 2005 versions can you see the Witch's cloak take on an inky black level. No idea what GWTW is supposed to look like, but the '04 remaster apparently had an original '39 Tech print to reference color timing from. The MGM DVD looks like someone applied the "auto color" filter in Photoshop.

I actually never bought THE WIZARD OF OZ at all, so I at least will welcome this on Blu-ray and be done buying it after my first purchase. I do agree they should stop with the multiple dipping, although you really can't fault them for bringing it out on Blu. Hopefully a release date will be set soon.
