Blu-Ray Backups

Hey guys. Is there any truth that your Blu-Ray player will "self-destruct" if you backup your expensive Blu-Ray discs and attempt to play them in your Blu-Ray player? I have the Samsung BD-P2550 and my cousin told me I couldn't back them up and play them because something inside of the Blu-Ray play will detect that it is not the original disc and will cause your Blu-Ray player to no longer work. Fact or Fiction? Thanks!

Re: Blu-Ray Backups

Here's the thing, John. In order to find out, you'd have to back up the Blu-ray in the first place, and to do that, you'd have to defeat the copy protection on the disc. Discussing that topic (and anything related) is a violation of HTF Rule 5:
Quote:
5. Respect for copyrights. Home Theater Forum has a strict policy of respecting the rights of copyright holders. . . . We also do not allow discussion of (a) how to make unauthorized copies of video or audio materials, (b) how to defeat any form of copy protection (including, for example, how to make “personal” copies of commercially produced DVDs) . . . .

I'll leave this thread open, just in case anyone knows the answer to your specific question. If anything else gets discussed relating to the copying of Blu-rays (including whether the HTF Rule is appropriate or what the law of copyright permits), the thread will be closed.

Re: Blu-Ray Backups

I haven't heard of this but we do use similar technology at work for postage meter ink cartridges. They are microchipped and electronically store the level of the ink in the cartridge. If the cartridge is used up and someone tries to refill it, the chip knows and will not allow the meter to run.

Re: Blu-Ray Backups

I think that since backups are burned, instead of being pressed, it's different technology, and the players just don't support that technology. I doubt seriously it destroys the player.

Besides, backing up blu rays aren't very cost effective. After you figure in the cost of the burner, and the software (not free). and the ridiculously expensive blu ray blank discs, you're better off going to the local pawn shop, and buy another copy (used) of the movie.

Re: Blu-Ray Backups

Look at it this way, if it were true that would mean you would not be able to put any of your HD home movies on Blu-Ray, because the player would not be able to differentiate between a "backed up" movie or a burned home movie.

Ok..........but there's probably a flag telling it if it's a copy of a commercial movie, or made from a cam. I don't know how it tells the difference. I'm not an engineer.

Without breaking forum rules I can honestly say that I know specifically of a person that uses a specific piece of software to backup Blu-Ray movies that he owns and burns them to BD-r disks and successfully plays them in his Sony BD player. What I said was just an analogy, I didn't want to get into specifics, cause I didn't want to break forum rules. So I know it does actually work.. I'm too cheap to buy the BD burner/ blank disks so no it's not me.. LOL

Re: Blu-Ray Backups

Ok, thanks for the input guys. I didn't think it would destroy the player but wanted to get some other insight.

I considered this option because I have young children and they are not the most careful with anything, much less DVD and Blu-Ray discs. Being I already paid for them, making a back-up in case one of my little angels decides to draw on one would save me cash down the road.
