Chris, Sony believed that this summer was too crowded and that a November release will give the movie bigger box office potential. The move also gave the makers of the film much more time in post-production to finish the many FX shots SPI (Sony Pictures Imageworks) still hadn't completed.

Chuck, "Public Enemies" is currently tracking at having a five-day opening haul in the area of $40-$50 million.

2012 looks freakin' epic! I thought I was long done with getting excited over something purely for FX reasons, but that movie looks like it could be the be all end all of disaster movies.

This weekend saw the biggest top 12 finish ever for the month of June as a whopping $195 million was spent at the box office. That marks an 8% increase from last year, as well as a 36% improvement over this frame in '07. 2009's massive year-to-date domestic gross now stands at $5.170 billion, which is up 12% compared to last year ($4.621 billion), 15% stronger than '07 ($4.509 billion), a 19% improvement over '06 ($4.361 billion), and 23% better than the year-to-date haul of '05 ($4.195 billion).

June's overall box office tally now stands at $1.026 billion, marking only the third time in history that the month has reached the billion-dollar plateau, joining June '04 ($1.006 billion) and June '08 ($1.035 billion). The industry expects June '09 to end up posting the biggest haul ever for the month. This also gives 2009 an unprecedented third month (January, May, and June) of box office earnings north of the $1 billion mark.

This weekend saw DreamWorks/Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" become only the second film in history to top the double-century mark after only five days in theaters. The films five-day mark of $201.2 million fell just a few clicks shy of the $203.8 million five-day haul of last year's "The Dark Knight". TF2's Friday-to-Sunday mark of $112.0 million is the seventh best in history trailing "The Dark Knight" ($158.4 million), "Spider-Man 3" ($151.1 million), "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" ($135.6 million), "Spider-Man" ($114.8 million), and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" ($114.7 million).

Here's what TF2 was able to accomplish in its daily numbers...
Wednesday: $60.6 million (biggest Wednesday mark, second biggest opening day mark)
Thursday: $28.6 million (fourth biggest Thursday mark, biggest non-opening Thursday haul)
Friday: $36.8 million (tenth biggest Friday mark, biggest non-opening Friday haul)
Saturday: $40.6 million (eighth biggest Saturday mark, only eighth film to earn $40 million-plus on a Saturday)
Sunday: $34.6 million (sixth biggest Sunday mark, only tenth film to earn $30 million-plus on a Sunday)

Despite horrible reviews, the movie has a real shot ultimately topping the $350 million domestic mark. TF2 posted a stellar average of $26,453 from its massive 4,234 theaters.

Disney's "The Proposal" looks headed for a final haul in the area of $100 million. WB's "The Hangover" looks to be about a week away from passing the double-century mark. Pixar/Disney's "Up" passed the $250 million plateau this weekend. WB's "My Sister's Keeper" got off to a decent start as it pulled in $12 million, giving it a per-theater average of $4,616 from its 2,606 locations. Sony's "Year One" took a disastrous 70% fall and is fading fast.

Sony's "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" has so far tallied $53.4 million. Paramount's "Star Trek" is now the biggest 'Trek' film in terms of theater admissions and is about a week away from passing the $250 million mark. Fox's 'Night at the Museum' sequel has now earned more than $163 million. Focus Features' "Away We Go" enjoyed a 93% increase in business this weekend as it entered 363 more locations, bringing its count to 495 theaters. Universal's "Land of the Lost" continues to fade and WB/Sony's "Terminator Salvation" has so far tallied just under $122 million.

Next weekend will see the busy Independence Day holiday frame as "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and "Public Enemies" will hit theaters. The general consensus is that TF2 may hold on to the top spot at the box office.

I actually like Spider-Man 3, but it's no Spider-Man or Spider-Man 2.

To put it simply, I want good films to make money, and I want bad films to not make money. Nothing more to it than that.

'Transformers' rocks overseas boxoffice

i can't believe i've been forced by friends 2watch it twice now. 2nite i'll watch it for the 3rd time on IMAX this time, again forced. *sigh*... i thought movie-watching was supposed to be fun

Oh how awful! Well I'm sure you'll watch it a dozen more times at the cinema before saying you've had enough Jedifingers, weren't you the guy who admitted to seeing Phantom Menace over 100 times before deciding it wasn't a good film? Your honour, I rest my case.

I saw Transformers 2 finally, just to see if it's as bad as some of you guys were making it out to be, while it was overlong and thanks to all the cartoony little robots running around, more kiddie-friendly than the first film. I enjoyed it. I'll post a review in the appropriate thread later, I might even mention you lovely guys in the review. No hate here. Plenty of action, I laughed out loud in a couple of places, cringed a few times too. I had a good time, now on to the next big summer film. So, when's G.I. Joe coming out?

hopefully harry potter will be able to wipe his ass all over transformers 2. I am sure that it will be a better movie then tf 2 could ever be.
the problem for this summer is that the writers strike had a big effect to it. now we get crap movies doing well because people just want to see something. I bet that transformers 2 will drop this weekend.

T2 will of course have a drop this weekend, but being a holiday weekend it may not be that bad - maybe 50%.  I am not expecting Public Enemies to pull a huge number.  I'm seeing it tonight and see if it fits into the July 4th mold.  Ice Age 2 comes out this week, doesn't it?  To be honest, I see that as a bigger threat to T2 than anything.

Gaah a Hairy Potter fan too.

I'm sure T2 will drop a bit this weekend but too late it's already heading for $500m, sequels are being prepared as we speak (who shuddered?).

phantom menace was 16 times i believe ;). well, that was just me by myself alone most of the times.

but these days, it's friends forcing me to watch it with them =P. ah, the life of a film enthusiast ;).

I am not really a harry potter fan either.. I will take spider-man or lotr over some other movies.. between harry potter and transformers 2.. I will take harry potter.

I didn't realize PE was a Michael Mann film.   My interest just plummeted for many of the reasons quoted in the article.

 I love living in a world where Mann films struggle and Bay will get a blank check to make another shitburger.  But I guess we get what we deserve.

Tuesday saw the end of the June session of business.  The industry saw the month earn about $1.086 billion, making it the biggest haul ever for the month, as well as marking only the third time since the early 1950s that June sold more than 150 million admissions (about 151.2 million) joining June 2004 (162.1 million) and June 2002 (161.9 million).  Going into July, '09 has already sold more than 728 million theater admissions, well ahead of the paces set during the previous five years.

The first day of July yielded fantastic results as yesterday saw "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" debut in the top spot with $14 million.  The 'Transformers' sequel continues its box office assault as it was able to pull in $11 million, and "Public Enemies" got off to a really strong start by launching with $8 million.

That's good to hear. I was surprised by the relatively good sized crowd that I saw the movie with this morning.

Ice Age is another one with a plot so bad I can't go... or I should say, I won't take the kids.  I wouldn't take a kid to a movie that asserts science so bad as to have mammals move away from the ice age, the ice age ends... and dinosaurs appear?  I may be a nit-picker, but since my kids LOVE stuff like mythbusters, I can't imagine taking them to something so ... wrong.  In Ice Age 2 you had HUMANS for pete sake!  

 

 

You couldn't drag me back to Transformers 2.  I've also not heard good things about Ice Age 3 or Public Enemies.  First Terminator, now this.  This is beginning to be the summer of letdowns.  Judd Apatow and Harry Potter are my last hopes!  Don't let me down...please.

There's still G.I. Joe on the horizon, seen the trailer? What a flick. They actually used cut scenes from video games in some scenes hoping no one will spot the difference. I can't wait.

Public Enemies - I think I'll wait for the dvd, not a huge Depp fan and growly Bale is far from being a favourite of mine these days. Plus the last Mann film I really enjoyed was Last of the Mohicans about 17 years ago. Heat had its moments, but moody De Niro barely registered and was obviously just waiting for his paycheck and Pacino was in shouty mode, plus it was a 100min thriller that went on and on for 170mins. Collateral was okay, Cruise had to grey his hair otherwise he'll still look about 20 and I thought the finish was a huge letdown which went on forever. Oh and I hated Miami Vice.

this summer is going to make the crappy summer of 1988 and 1991 look good in comparasion.
I have not seen much this summer. only star trek, up, and t4.

There were humans in the first film. The whole plot revolved over what to do with that orphaned baby. There were humans around for the real Ice Age too. Who do you think killed off all the Wooly Mammoths! ;)
 I don't expect any more scientific accuracy from the Ice Age films than I do from the Flintstones. It's comedy! ;)

I'd recommend seeing Star Trek, Up, Public Enemies and Away We Go (admittedly, that last one is not a 'summer' movie or even one that will appeal to everyone). And I thought The Hangover, Drag Me To Hell, The Taking Of Pelham 1-2-3 remake and Year One were OK and, if you don't get to the theater much, they're at least worth a rental when they hit video.

Plus, I've also got high hopes for Bruno, the new Harry Potter, Funny People and Inglorious Basterds.
