This Sony Pictures Classics film was an official selection of the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival and was the Czech Republic’s official selection for the 80th Academy Awards. I Served the King of England will be released on DVD on February 17, 2009, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for an SLP of $28.96.
Equally at home as a film or stage director, Jiri Menzel achieved worldwide fame in the late 1960s as part of the influential Czech New Wave. This movement, made up of young directors who used their filmmaking skills to satirically protest the communist regime that had taken over Czechoslovakia, included such talents as Milos Forman, Ivan Passer and Jan Kadar. Menzel’s first feature length film, the Oscar-winning Closely Watched Trains was based on a story by Bohumil Hrabal. Forty years later, Menzel brings Hrabal’s novel I Served the King of England to the screen.
Synopsis
Dreaming of becoming a millionaire, a short-but-ambitious Czech works his way into a posh pre-war luxury spa, where his marriage to a Hitler-loving fraulein provides him with a golden opportunity to make his fondest wish come true.
I Served the King of England was directed by Jiri Menzel, written by Jiri Menzel, based on the novel by Bohumil Hrabal. Starring Ivan Barnev, Oldrich Kaiser and Julia Jentsch. Produced by Rudolf Biermann. In Czech with English subtitles.
